View Full Version : Getting a little worried here (seeing spots)

This all happened very suddenly- I was just sitting going to the toilet, and all of the sudden spots appeared before my eyes. You know how this will happen if you stand up too quickly or look into a too-bright setting sun? That's what it's like right now, except it's not going away and seems to be getting worse (how worse it's going to get, I have no idea). My vision isn't exactly blocked, but slightly obscured and I feel quite disoriented when it comes to my sight. I'm even having difficulty typing this, but I still can maanage alright.

I've tried looking up these symptoms on the internet, but I can't find anything but stupid old jokes about seeing spots (lol). Am I simply getting a migraine? It's never felt this intense or debilitating before a mingraine before, which I've experienced once or twice. Now my vision seems to be getting worse. Hmm, my head does hurt slightly.

My mom thinks it may be because of the mold downstairs- we had serious flooding a coupe of days ago and I unwisely slept downstairs on the couch even though it smells heavily of mold, must, and the bacteria that must be forming rapidly down there. I slept down there one night and listened to a little music down there today as well, could that be what is causing this dizziness?

I'm asking for advice because I'm a little worried that it could be something more serious (you never know, right?). FYI, I'm nearing 18 years old, am female, and have no health problems.

This early afternoon at fencing I felt odd, too- very tired and strained, like I could barely stand (but I wasn't really dizzy at the time). I soon felt better, then went shopping and now here I am.

Any ideas? Thanks! Right now it's getting even cloudier. Maybe it is just a migraine...

I don't want to scare you, but I have no idea what might be causing this, and if it were happening to me, I would call a doctor.

I also think you should call a Dr. I seem to remember something about a serious eye problem with similar symptoms. I could be wrong but I wouldn't ignore it.

Sounds like floaties. Are they black? Sometimes blue and pink? I used to get something similar. Although it can be the symptom of migraines, mine were stress and anxiety related. Go to the doctor anyways.
Also I suggest not trying to self diagnose on the internet, its full of scary stuff.

One thing an opthamologist once told me. If it looks like a piece of hair is in your vision, that is a sign of a detatched retina and needs urgent attention.

Definitely get to a doctor, as fast as you can.

If it's something to do with your retina, it could detach and you only have about 24 hours to have it re-attached or you could be blind permanently.

Don't take any chances.

well, now i'm scared! i frequently (maybe a couple of times a week????) see a little floaty thing that goes across my eye... it looks like a centimeter of a vein or a thingy under a microscope?? it's transparent. not trying to make this thread about me i just felt paranoid for a sec there.

That sounds normal. We all have those floties in our eyes. Seeing them once or twice a week is fine... Seeing huge amounts + feeling dizzy = more seriousl problem. Of course, if you think it may be an issue, call a doctor!

Absolutely - see a Doc right away.

Floaties are likely - but blood vessel problems are possible. I'm no expert, but flashing lights usually mean a partially detached retina.

I'm sure your doc will want to find out if your blood pressure is high or low. If you were "straining" and your blood pressure is up - I know that is classic for detaching floaties. If it was low, he'll want to check you out.

Best of luck and don't delay.

I feel so silly, because this thread has gotten so long. :) *Blushes*

I'm quite fine now. I still feel like I may have some bug I'm fighting, but other than that a good night's sleep made everything much better. The 'floaties' eventually went away, and I could see again but I still felt a tad dazed and quite nauseous at one point, but then I didn't eat anything for a while afterward and I was alright, yay me.

I still get the feeling that it was a bad reaction to the mold build-up, so I'll be careful around that. I'm probably not supposed to be exposed so much to that sort of thing, anyway, nor perhaps should anyone.

Thanks everybody for their responses! I didn't think it was much, I've just gotten good (not to mention fast!!) responses on this forum, thank goodness!

At any rate, I've had "floaties" all my life, so to speak- when I was a kid I'd rub my closed eyes hard (who knows if that's bad for them or not, lol!), and rainbow fireworks would appear before me in the dark. It was awesome. :) And today, sometimes I'll look at the sky on my back, and when I move my eyes up and down, back and forth, little "eye" clouds zoom this way and that.

I'm glad you're okay! (be careful with your eyes...too much abuse can damage your retinas) :book:

And don't start a thread about nearly passing out and you don't know why...and then VANISH for four days!!!!!! :whack:

I was getting worried about you! :-/

How much would it suck if a month from now, someone went into the MIA thread like, "Where's PJ?" And, we loost at your last posts and last activity and see that you're last post was THAT!?!?!?!?!

We'd be like, "Bummer...PJ probably died..."

So don't do that!!!! :whack:

Yeah those are just imperfections in the gel in a certain part of your eye that's reflecting light I believe. I did a research project on that once. Most people have at least a little of those.

ok, a couple of things:

1. it sounds like a classical migraine. sometimes their characteristics change over time. i've been getting them since i was 4 and they evolve over time. of course as others have said, seeing a doctor is best.

2. if you're fencing either foil or sabre, please stop and switch immediately to epee!!! :sunny:

The other thing that I thought of right away was dehydration.

I started having all of these symptoms, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision and black spots in my vision, and I got all stressed out, so I went to the doctor and she wanted to do CAT scans and sh*t. I'm not a doctor person so this was not appealing to me. I ended up talking to a pharmacist to ask him about taking more vitamins and he said "those are classic signs of dehydration. drink more water." Duh! Needless to say, I try to drink more water and have not paid $1M in doctor and insurance costs!

Do you really think it's wise to recommend to others that they get their health and medical advice from a pharmacist? Those are also ALL symptoms of diabetes.

I actually had this problem before quite a few times. I found that stress was a major role in them. Migraines have been linked to them as well.

I would also get the same systems when doing physical lifting/running and not getting enough hydration in my system, you can try next time (if the event occurs again) to try drinking a lot of water, take a multivitamin (such as a one-a-day), or even try drinking some Pedialyte or Gatorade for some straight electrolytes.

I've had it tested a few times, but they never found a real cause, and since it comes and goes, it could just be about anything as it doesn't have a set frequency.

Hope this helps.
