I was at the health food grocery the other day (its like a whole foods, only better... heh.. better how? better prices!!! Maybe like trader joes? I've never been there as I am from le Canada!) and saw "Kelp Caviar" in three flavors--salmon roe, sturgeon roe, and wasabi.
Has anyone tried these? I didn't but it as I'm not sure I even want caviar, but I'm tempted to try it if only to give a review, lol!

edit: I just looked around the site.. apparently they're calorie-free?!
Edit 2: Other cool things I saw there that I wasn't sure if I'd seen around before were vegan pre-made puff pastry (chef grade apparently?), vegan pre-made pie crusts (in several flavors--whole wheat, spelt, regular, you know, that sort of thing..) a few brans of vegan frozen dinners/frozen entrees... um, some vegan gummies, but I think I've seen those online. And a brand of soy yogurt called "soyage" which I bought two of and will test--despite my slight soy intolerance, hehehe. That shall be on my blog soon enough!

Yes, I have tried this! I went to a 7 course vegan gourmet dinner last weekend, and the hors d'oeuvres were rice crackers with thick creamy cucumber spread topped with kelp caviar. There was so little caviar that I couldn't taste it all that well, but it felt slightly glutinous and it added a bit of seaweed/salty flavour, and it looked SO authentic. I've seen it in health food stores too, but I didn't get it because I couldn't think of anything to use it in.
Ohh, aren't the health food stores in the states GREAT? I sure miss living in Hilo, Hawaii; the population was only 50,000 but there were 3 large health food stores. Here in Ottawa (almost 1 million) there are 3 small health food stores and several other hole-in-the-ground, not-worth-your-time health food stores. I wish we had Whole Foods and Trader Joe's around here!
Get all the groceries you can carry and run for the border! ;)

Seriously hun? Come visit Toronto--I've never been to a health food store in the states, but anything I hear about there I have here, plus some! (like the Kelp Caviar).

Froggy bought a jar of this stuff: "CaviArt" vegetarian seaweed caviar (http://www.caviart.us/index.php) at Seattle's Veg-Fest last March. He really liked it but it was a little "fishy" for me.
They sell it in stores around here.

Whoops, I misread your post, I thought you were at a Trader Joe's in the States and had seen all the cool stuff like the vegan puff pastry and kelp caviar...:o
I heard you have a Whole Foods in Toronto too! One of the only ones in Canada. I'm going to Toronto tomorrow (R.E.M. baby!), so maybe I'll try to stop in there and stock up on some food to bring back!
(There are so many things I saw at the Hilo health food stores that you can't get here! Wha Guru Chews, Boca Burgers, sprouted grain bagels... Well, here in Ottawa anyway. I think it's because we're right between Toronto and Montreal, so they don't want to waste health food stores on us when they could build more in Toronto and Montreal ;) )

I dislike whole foods--if you can get to the Big Carrot (the one that had the Kelp Caviar--among the bajillions of other stuff!) it's RIGHT outside of Chester station. I HIGHLY recommend there!! Sprouted grain bagels you can for sure get, as well as boca burgers. Wha Guru Chews maybe? I haven't looked for them. PLEASE go to the Big Carrot--Whole Foods Toronto rips out your wallet and soul...
http://www.thebigcarrot.ca/
Or--if you really want to stay downtown, go to Kensington Market and visit Essence of Life http://www.blogto.com/grocery/essenceoflife/ and then Tutti Frutti http://www.blogto.com/grocery/tuttifrutti
Some things are cheaper at Tutti Frutti but the selection is better at Essence of Life (and some things are cheaper at EoL anyway. They're RIGHT next door)--plus Kensington is killer, and RIGHT by chinatown where you're bound to find lots of cool stuff. If you want someone to explore vegan TO with, let me know. :)

Wow, thanks for the tip!!! I'll definitely make sure I go there! I'm staying at a hotel near Eglinton Station, so it'll be easy to get there. But if my bf decides to go with me and wants to drive, is there parking at the store?
I can't believe they have Boca Burgers! I knew you could get them in Canada! (I used to get them at regular grocery stores in B.C.). Even though the Boca Burger website themselves says they've never distributed them anywhere in Canada . And boy, if they have Wha Guru Chews, they better watch out, I'm going to buy a whole case. And tons of sprouted grain bagels to freeze. Thank you SO much for telling me this!
Sorry for getting your thread off-track :o .

No worries about the thread.
if Boca Burgers are not available in Canada then maybe not at the Big Carrot either--sorry for jumping the gun. I don't eat veggie burgers--but they do have many many brands you'll be able to try from.
Whole Foods has an underground paid parking, the Carrot doesn't have its own specific parking, but it's a residential neighborhood so you can always park on a back street. Kensington is pretty near impossible to park at I think... the subway will take you right there though if you go to Spadina then south till just past Dundas (they'll call out "Kensington Market!" after the street name so you'll know.)
There's also a few interesting bakeries in Kensington that if you can't find the sprouted bagels in any of these you can likely find it in--however if you mean ezekiel brand you will not have a problem at any of the above I'd bet.
Your biggest problem will be that tomorrow is Sunday.
This thread might interest you: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/330317 I guess you will wan to go to whole foods... :-/ (I have never spent so much on so little in my life, as when I went to Whole Foods..)

I have never seen Kelp Caviar, but I really only shop at Abundant Life, in Downtown Hilo, and Keaau Natural Foods, in Keaau. Both are smaller, family owned, not very slick stores. Island Naturals, out by WalMart and Borders, could very well have it, they tend to have the more exotic, high-priced stuff. They are much more corporate, and they also sell beer and meat (free-range organic local). I never shop there. Too expensive overall...

there is parking at the big carrot (take the side road next to it- jackman ave), its alongside the back of the store, but its small and tight and always packed full plus a queue of cars waiting for a space- cos it serves the whole of carrot common.
i tend to take jackman ave as if i was going to use carrot common parking, then instead of turing right to use that carpark, i turn left into humdale ave as i pass the store parking, drive down the street for a few seconds, then park in the pay and display carpark which is right across the crossroads on the left of erindale ave. its just 3 minutes walk down the street (2 really short residential blocks), stops me overloading myself with more yummy food than i can carry, plus gives me a few precious minutes walk during which i can stuff myself with pakoras and gluten free chocolate cake on the way back to my car.
the big carrot is the best place ever. i love it.

I think I will go to Big Carrot, even if they don't have on-site parking. If I do go anywhere, I'll do it Monday morning before I come back to Ottawa. Big Carrot opens at 9:00, so I can definitely make it there before leaving, even on the subway.
They might have Boca Burgers, despite the company insisting they've never distributed to Canada. When I lived in Victoria, B.C., I could buy Boca Burgers in health food stores AND regular grocery stores! But then one day I stopped seeing them, and when I phoned Boca to ask, they said "What? No, we don't distribute any of our products to Canada, sorry". He couldn't answer me when I asked why I had been buying Boca Burgers in Victoria for 6 months LOL!!! And they still sell them at Denny's restaurant (though, it's a cheese flavoured one :( ). So I'll keep my fingers crossed that they will be at Big Carrot.
