Hi :hi
I have 4 kids brought up lacto-ovo veggie and 2 of them are big cheese fans

I am now making the transition to vegan, which I am finding simple, apart from finding nice vegan hard cheeses :wall:

I recently moved from the UK but I tried all the brands there and none were good, although I did find the soft cheese Tofutti

Can anyone recommend the brands of vegan cheese which are most palatable? They are most fond of cheddar and Monterey Jack?

I haven't tried any of them yet as I have been so put off with the cheeses in the UK

I don't have a problem giving it up myself as I was never a big cheese fan anyway :)

What cheese sauce recipes work well too? I made the cheezy sauce from Veganomicon but found it bland

Have you tried Cheezly? Most people usually like it.

Maybe you could invest in The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak? Plenty of great cheezy recipes in there.

Yeah I tried Cheezly (Redwood is a UK company) and it wasn't too bad except for an off putting sweet chemical smell :spew: A lot of them seem to have that :(

Here's a site with a bunch of recipes for vegan-cheeses:

I haven't tried them but they look simple enough and the ingredients aren't so pricey or hard to find that you couldn't give them a try.

Vegan Gourmet is one I've seen. I usually don't purchase vegan cheeses, since we don't really eat cheese at home anyway.

If you do a search on google on "vegan cheese" you'll come up with lots of different kinds.

It may take a while to appreciate vegan cheeses if you have recently been eating animal cheese. I couldnt stomach any non-dairy substitutes for a couple months after going vegan. Your tastes will most likely change, try giving it some time to be without any kinds of cheese.

My kids love the Galaxy brand vegan rice slices. It's really hard to find, but they are yummy and I like the fact that they aren't made from soy. Galaxy also has vegan soy slices and my kids like them, too...I just prefer to buy the rice ones.
They make a decent grilled cheese sandwich.

For topping pizza, Vegan Gourmet's mozarella is pretty good. I'm not a fan of their cheddar at ALL, but they do okay with their mozarella and Monterey Jack.

vegan gourmet mozerella isn't half bad when its melted on stuff like pizza.

galaxy american cheddar slices are ok on a veggieburger with loads of ketchup and other distractions.

tofutti does some hard slices too, but i haven't tried them.

i think i've seen sheese in canada, so if you liked that, its possible that its available where you are too.

i don't think you're gonna find anything thats perfect, as far as vegan cheese goes. time makes its more palatable- when you forget exactly what real cheese tastes like.

it might be easier to get your kids addicted to hummus, avocado, and/or nutritional yeast, and hope they forget about cheese, than to transfer them across to vegan cheeses.

Do your kids like Feta cheese at all? I happen to really like Sunergia's Soy Feta Cheeses, especially on sandwhiches and the Mediternian Herb Style. :) It's great on sandwhiches (but unfortunately, doesn't melt), has a good texture... but if you leave it out it'll stink up the kitchen, lol.

How do you guys get the vegan gourment to melt on somthing like pizza, any tips? Note that the galaxy America ones are good but they got some rice cheese's that contain Caesin, a milk protein, which will not suit vegans or people with IBS...they do have some vegan rice slices which melt nicely but unfortunatly don't sell those in cheese blocks..I did buy a new vegan cheese brand that ive never seen before the other day, I havnt tried it yet but will keep you all posted

Broil it for a few seconds until the cheese starts to liquify and melt. Then take it out of the oven and let the cheese cool off a bit.
