It seems to be up to the human trials stage , how they are going ...who knows .

Henry Daniell, a professor at UCFs College of Medicine, has found that genetically modified lettuce could restore the bodys ability to produce insulin. That finding put him the national spotlight. (SHANNA FORTIER / January 28, 2008)

that would only help some.I think I remeber my wife telling me when we first started dateing that her body produces insulin but her body attacks it. I could be wrong tho.Im sure she will post if she see this.Very cool never the less.

I think I'm in a similar situation. Maybe I should get together with your wife? :naughty:

GH...thats type 2 diabetes. The lettuce idea is for the lost causes, like myself, w/ type 1....our bodies dont produce any insulin at all.
Curses! you (islets of) Langerhans!!!
I heard about this a bit ago, it must've been the same guy, but since i didnt hear anything lately, i figured it had proved to be a futile attempt.
So,thanks for posting this!
I look forward to the day when my dreams will be crushed again! hehheh
There was something about the Gila monster and its saliva...anyone hear about that lately?

I think you can have a combination of not producing enough insulin and the body not utilising it properly. I'll check with the endocrinologist next time I see them.

Actually there are three classifications of diabetes:
Type 1- you don't produce insulin at all...
*Type 1.5- you produce some insulin but also produce antibodies to said insulin (me, when I get sick my bs bottoms out not goes up *imune system is redirected*)
Type 2-your body slows down and eventually stops producing insulin due to age or in the case of being overweight the body is unable to keep up with supply and demand.
*after reviewing my sources this is something currently being considered not actual fact! sorry
This is really cool but absolutely no good for me. It's a step forward and it's very exciting but bleh no help to me...Everybody is more worried about old fat people instead of the young future generations...stupid scientists..
Found this site that describes the types

sorry lol..irritates me a bit :wall:

Yeah, you are right, sorry it was late...:
Type 1: no insulin is produced, insulin dependent, thought to be "autoimmune".
Type 2:
Either your pancreas doesnt produce enough insulin, this is common w/ ppl who are overweight
or
Your insulin receptors are not able to use the insulin that you do produce *aka insulin resistance.
There are different classes of drugs that work on diff. parts of your "diabetes"... either by making your receptor cells more receptive, or by controlling the liver output of glycogen (stored glucose) or by using insulin injections.
Gestational Diabetes: Diabetes during pregnancy, may disappear after birth or not. Usually forecasts getting diabetes in the future for the mother.

BUT WAIT! it is!
Daniell found himself in the national spotlight after he published a study in July in which he found that genetically modified lettuce could restore the body's ability to produce insulin and help millions of Americans who suffer from insulin-dependent diabetes.
Daniell conducted tests on mice by giving them capsules of insulin produced from the modified lettuce for eight weeks.
By the end of the treatment, the mice reached normal blood sugar levels.
:hamster: I dont know about you, but im totally holding my breath!! :surprised
I think it was oh,12 yrs ago that i read a scientific article that said if we "wait just 5-8 more years, we'll have a cure for type 1. "
uhhhh....????

O/k guys , I have Prof Daniels address ....I don't know if he will reply , but is there any questions you would like me to ask him re his research .

(thanks bluesand for the PM!)
but, honestly, i dunno what i'd ask?! They said in the article that he gets inundated w/ emails, so who knows if it be read by him/ anyone.
I guess maybe I'd like to know how far off, realistically, it would be before it potentially was offered to the public, even under other research studies. I go to the Joslin Diabetes Clinic in boston and have taken part in some research myself, so i would woonder if there are any plans to expand the research to other hospitals?
