Adopt-a-Newbie Program

When I first got online the first thing I did was join a mailing list. They had this program that they called "Adopt-a-Newbie" where new members (at their request) would be paired with more experienced members (who volunteered). The purpose of the program was to provide people with someone to go to when they had questions. I know a lot of strong friendships were formed out of that program. My "parent" lives two hours from here and after a while I got a newbie of my own who lives here in town, after four years I still talk to both on a regular basis and we sometimes attend concerts together.

Of course you don't have to meet your newbie in person but we would try to pair them up by location. I think something like this might be beneficial here, especially if it's geared toward new vegetarians. It's a little intimidating to join a new community and I think we'd all like to do what we can to make that easier on someone. Assigning them a "parent" will automatically give them a friend on the board.

So yeah, people would be paired primarily based on age and location. You would correspond with them through IM's, PM's, e-mail, etc.

I'm not sure about the specifics. I'd like to hear your comments and suggestions.

Sure this sounds like a good idea to help show the newbies around and answer their questions if they have any. And that way they will have a friend here. :) ill volunteer to adopt a newbie~!
