View Full Version : Pet hiding places that drove you nuts!

So, I was just thinking in another thread, and I thought to myself "I wonder how many times a cat has vanished into thin air, scared me to death, and reappeared in some really weird spot later..."
The weirdest ones by far are these:
Chloe was asleep in a small drawer in the phone center, curled up and impossible to see.
Chloe figured out that there's a hole beneath the sink, so she snuck in there and napped with the poisonous cleaning products!
In the medicine cabinet.
The top level of the linen closet behind a stack of sheets.
Inside of a mattress.
Inside a dumpster.
Inside the back of the dryer (that was HORRIBLE!)
Under five layers of bed covers.
In the movie cabinet.
What are some places your companions have hid and caused distress? :]

Hasn't done anything to cause me distress but the cat sure gets a shock when he hides under cars, things that need watering or in a place near where we park (the sight of a car coming right for him usually sends him running.)

My ferrets find a way into everything...
One got into the laundry room and fell asleep in the dryer vent
The drawer under the oven, which thankfully doesn't get too hot.
On the shelf we keep toilet paper on, because there was no way he could climb onto it.
In the basement on a table surrounded by shattered glass (there were two water glasses on the table)
Under the cabinets
I let them play at the pet store with the ferret there, and Curi got himself trapped in an empty fish tank.
Sleeping in the dog food bowl - my dog found him first and was laying next to the bowl crying.
Snuggled up with my dog in his crate (Crazy figured out how to get out of his first cage)
Across the street in my neighbors garage

When we first got our old cats, Lucy was very nervous, and hid behind the washing machine for 3 days! We were so worried!

The worst? Right at my feet. Cookie will not bark, paw at me, or do anything but wag her tail to let me know she's there when I'm desperately searching all over for her, screaming her name, and in tears. She just doesn't get that it's not always easy to notice the tiny 4 pound fluffbutt at my feet when she keeps going behind me. I can miss her even when I look down because she is wagging her tail so hard that she moves back and forth and when I look down and to the right, she's at the left. I hurry to look left and she's already at the right. I can either spin around in circles and have my head fall off trying to locate her only to find that she wasn't there anyway or I can continue hunting for her in the weirdest places only to find that she had been following me from place to place for who knows how long.

The other day I took off my t-shirt & tossed it onto my bed... one of the kittens was missing & we were looking EVERYWHERE for it. We figured it got outside. After looking forever we decided to just wait until it came out or came to the door. I went up to our room and all of a sudden my t-shirt started moving and there the little guy was, comfy and napping inside the shirt.
Our cats have gotten into the drawers of a bed, ripped a hole in the box spring and climbed in there for a nap.

my cat really only hides when he's scared. he doesn't hide to sleep, he sleeps out in the open, usually in the most inconvenient in-the-way spot possible.
when when he's scared by a loud noise or company coming in or whatever he hides under the bed (we're not sure how he manages to liquify himself under there, he's huge lol) when the bedroom door is closed and he can't find another good hiding spot he's been known to hide behind the toilet :brood:
but when he was a kitten he and his sister also hid in the boxspring of our bed and managed to rip out the lining on the bottom of our loveseat and climb up inside and hide in there. as a kitten he also had a lovely habit of hiding out on a kitchen chair until one of the other cats walked under it so he could pounce down on top of them. attack from above!!

The best (or worst) place my cat ever found was after Xmas this year. I couldn't find him for probably 20 minutes of searching and I have a pretty small apartment. I re-checked the bedroom closet and saw two gleaming eyes staring up at me from inside a box. He had somehow managed to get inside a big cardboard box that had 2 bed pillows in it, the top of the box was folded in. Somehow, he got inside it so the box looked completely undistubed and slid down in between the two pillows, then was staring out.
Other then that it's the typical places.. under comforters, under beds, under couches, inside cabinets.

Somewhere along the way, the cat parade has managed to tear the liner under the boxspring of my bed and the kittens in the house now love to sleep under there.
One of my roommates' cats got trapped in the drawer that's attached to the sofa. We're not sure how she did it, but the drawer was closed when my roommate found her and it looked like the cat was running out of air!
Oh, when the kittens were smaller, they liked to curl up altogether behind the tv cabinet in my room. The cabinet is right up against the wall so the kittens looked all smooshed, but they didn't seem to care.

Princess Leia, my cat, has pulled all kinds of tricks. When it's time to go to the vet, she always disappears. Once, I had to cancel the appointment because I couldn't find her!! When it came time for the rescheduled one, I had left the bathroom sink cabinet open....she had crawled in and climbed into the open space where the pipes go into the wall, and into the interior of the house!
Another time, I was looking everywhere for her, and was afraid she had gotten out--she was hidden underneath a towel. When we moved into a new apartment, she somehow got into the drawers in the kitchen. I kept removing her and would open another cabinet or drawer and find her in that one--later, I discovered there were holes at the bottom of all of the cabinets and she crawled up the back of them into the drawers.
She also loves to get in the bookcase and sleep behind the books...and this isn't a hiding place, but she sure loves the balcony ledge--which is about 20 ft above the tiled foyer. She scares me to death...

It wasn't exactly a hiding place, but my cat Oscar made a breakout attempt once, and went up the highest tree in the yard. Of course. I would have climbed it, but it was a smooth trunk for the first ten feet. But don't worry, she eventually jumped down.
Onto the roof.
One of my hermit crabs also...Somehow...escaped the tank once. Managed to get down the glass, off the shelves they were on, and then curled up into his shell. In the middle of a large collection of other shells. It made me laugh more then anything. I don't think he realized his was the only emerald green one...

Jinx is like a 'ninja kitty'.
Under the recliner
Under piles of clothes
In piles of pillows ( he makes little bunkers) :D
Behind furniture (he gets himself stuck.)
In the garage (he got left over night because we figured he was in one of his usual spots)
^ He also ended up geting out of the garage one night and when I went to the garage to look for him the next morning, He was OUTSIDE of the garage trying to get back in :|
Behind the drawers of dressers
Inside my armoire (on the bottom, in the back of the shelve of it, on top of it)
Behind the blinds in the windows
Inside closets
Inside boxes
Under furniture
Under my bed
Inside cabnets
One time, When he was a kitten, We were looking EVERYWHERE for him, For hours. Turns out my mattress had a rip in the bottom and he had made a bed INSIDE of my mattress. :surprised

I haven't been able to FIND the hiding place....I search everywhere, sometimes, to no avail. Then all of a sudden they magically appear and I have no idea where the heck they've been! Very frustrating...

My cat climbed into the basement ceiling when we moved here. I had to fish him back out again. He wasn't hiding as much as stuck and distressed.
When my parents watch my sister's cat, he hides in my mom's roll top desk in this compartment that folds up that you'd keep a typewriter on (you know, when people used to use them :D)
Both of mine have gotten themselves closed into drawers. One of our cats once got folded up with the sofa bed -- not in the mattress though, there was a very small hollow compartment to the side of where the bed folds in. He was there.

The first day I moved into my new appartment, my dad, sister and I were going to go out for some food and wanted to make sure my kitten was ok there. It was only a one bedroom appartment with very little furniture and we couldn't find her for at least fifteen minutes. I had seen a small hole between the toe kick of the cabinets and the stove in the corner, but thought it was too small for her to fit through. She did squiggle her little but through there and was hiding by the hot water tank.
Most of her hiding places I know now, she so nosey she has to peek out when I call her.
I had a rat who usually came when called, except when she climbed up too high. She also liked to go up under my bed into the drawers.
