Okay... so I'm in the market for a watch and I found several that I really REALLY like. They're Harry Potter watches done in an elegant and sexy style. Here's the thing, they all have leather bands. What do you do in a situation like this? a) not buy any watch with a leather band, ever, no matter what or b) buy the watch and immediately change the band. B doesn't really seem right because having bought the watch supports the leather industry, even though changing the band does not promote it. *sigh* This is so annoying. They're such great watches.

I won't buy a watch with a leather band. The decision is yours, though, so do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

Have you tried contacting the watch manufacturer to see if they could substitute an alternate watchband?

Buying the watch probably doesn't send the message, "Yes! People want leather bands!" It sends the message that people want the Harry Potter watches. I'm sure the company isn't going to think their bands are a problem unless they hear it from consumers.

Here's a suggestion: write the company and say, "I'd really like to see these watches offered with non-leather bands."

Whether you get the watch or not is really up to you.

I will do as you both suggested and write the company, both to ask and request. Thanks for your input!

Yeah, I would never compromise my principles just because I thought something was really cool-looking. Not much different than eating meat because you like the way it tastes. Poor justification, IMHO.

I like the other suggestion, too.

Just a thought, what if you bought it second-hand (haha, watch pun!)? I've often tried to wrap my mind around scenarios like that.. because if it's second hand it's not supporting the industry in the least.

If you could find one second hand, you could re-donate the band and just keep the watch face. I don't see a problem with that at all. Personally, I wouldn't want to wear leather because it's no different than wearing human skin to me. However, do what you feel comfortable with. :)

I never buy any leather products at all. Just last night I passed up some awesome shoes because they had a leather upper. I think if someone gave it to you as a gift then it's different. You can wear it if it was a gift.
