Does anyone know of a brand of weight lifting gloves that are vegan (non-leather)? Specifically, I want ones without the wrist wrap - I need to get my wrists stronger! When I googled this topic I only found ones that have a wrist wrap... I need that have smaller sizes for women. Thanks!

You make your wrists stronger by lifting weight. Work on improving your grip strength rather than wearing gloves. If your grip is slipping or if you can't hold the weights, you probably need to reduce the weight just a little. As you progress in your workouts, your grip will get stronger.

Or use chalk.

Many times we at SECT CrossFit are asked why we do not use gloves during our workout, seeing as we are often lifting and pulling heavy weights. People have a hard time understaning that like most products in the fitness industry, gloves are completely useless. In fact, to paraphrase Coach Mark Rippetoe ("Rip") "gloves are a completely useless piece of material that create an unecessary moveable surface between your hand and the object being lifted/pushed" (Starting Strength 2ed., 2007).

While not everyone aspires to have callouses on their hands, or "man hands", they are an inevitable part of strength and conditioning. At best, you can hope to prolong their development and get good care of them once they do develop.

If you are currently using gloves, stop. Learn grip techniques that will stave off callous development. Use of chalk helps also. If you have not started using gloves, do not start now. You have made a wise choice and will enjoy years of heavy strength training.
I have minor callouses on my hands, but nothing that a little lotion doesn't minimize.

I don't wear gloves when weight lifting unless i'm working with one that has those stupid little metal 'spikes' because they stab little holes in my hands. I just use regular fitted gloves for that.

Besides, You should be proud of your 'roughed up' hands. It's a sign of strengh.

the "spikes" are called knurling and help with grip.

I think Rippetoe made an extremely good point that all you're doing is adding an extra, movable layer, between your hand and the barbell. proper hand placement and grip improvement allay the need for gloves.

I think it's more a sign that you've messed up your hands with nasty callouses ...he he he

Evelinadatta, I used to use a pair of Everlast neoprene gloves that I got from K-mart (I think?) They were ok but they made my hands sweat a bit and were a bit big for me.

I use these now (http://www.amazon.com/Harbinger-Neoprene-Weight-Training-Gloves/dp/B000IDER26) ......much better fit and less sweaty.

Thanks, guys. I am not really concerned about the callouses but my palms get pretty sweaty, and it almost feels dangerous at times... I thought the gloves would help with the sweat? I will look into the chalk thing too. Just seemed that gloves (yes, I want the ones that only cover the palms, not wrists) are a less messy alternative.

My gloves get slightly sweaty too - also neoprene - but I'd rather that right now than horrible callouses on my hands.

I know what they are for, I just didn't know the name. Thanks.

They don't help my grip at all, They just put tiny little holes in my hand. I have to use my hands a lot, Having tiny punture wounds all over them is a problem for me. Because of that, I can't use them.
