Ilkley Moor has been free of guns and shooting for the past decade, but Bradford Council are set to change this and are considering re-issuing licenses for local shoots to use the public-moorland for their disgusting 'sport'.

In a month's time, the council are set to make their decision and decide the fate of Ilkley Moor - either shooting hundreds of thousands of wild grouse in a cruel bloodsport; or just say no to this mindless killing.

Anyone who has been on the moors know it is a good and peaceful walk with magnificent views of the Yorkshire town of Ilkley; and a range of undisturbed wildlife. The shooters wanting to use the land claim it will help with conservation, but it has been well documented that the bloodsport does more harm than good.

Please contact the council and ask for no wildlife massacre to happen on the land; and re-post this message:

SAMPLE LETTER:
"Dear Sir / Madam,
I was disgusted to hear that Bradford Council are considering the re-issuing of grouse shooting licenses for Ilkley Moor.

It has been well documented that shooting is a cruel bloodsport and is only a way of making money for those involved. Birds are simply blasted out of the sky, after being frightened by beaters from the undergrowth around, and many hit the ground still alive as a 'clean-shot' is hard to get on a moving creature.

Given that a small group of shooters can kill up to 500 birds a day, many of the victims are not actually eaten. According to an editorial in Country Life magazine (February 1, 2001) some of the ‘surplus’ is buried in specially dug holes. Added to these casualties are the numerous unretrieved birds who die slowly from their gunshot wounds, out of sight of the guns."

Please do not re-issue shooting licenses on Ilkley Moor,
Yours Sincerely,"
