Ok, I am asking this of people that are young enough to vividly remember getting thier wisdom teeth pulled....I am not. :surprised My son has to do his surgically on Monday, and I was wondering if you all think he would be up to riding horses and spending the night at a ranch on Tuesday?

Ugh, I wouldn't have been. I was out of it for three or four days.

It really depends on how it goes. He maybe, or he may not be, but I would guess not.

I had one removed last year, and I wasn't up for anything like that for at least 3-4 days.

LOL thanks girls....I was tough, but he has to be put under general anesthesia in an operating room, due to his sleep apnea and schizophrenia....

Of course, the dude ranch was prepaid a gazillion months ago and I am hoping (crosses fingers) they will work with me on the day we are going :)

I doubt it. I was doing pretty well the day after, eating solid food and talking and stuff, but I still spent most of the day in bed watching TV. I had mine out on a Friday, and I still wasn't feeling all that hot on Monday when my parents made me go to school.

He'll probably be on pain meds for a few days, and that will knock him out more than anything.

I had the general - I'm a total wuss about surgery and no way could I have done it with a local. I was still bleeding pretty steadily 24 hours afterwards. I was on the couch or in bed for 3-4 days. I don't think I had anything more solid than a banana for a week. Based on my experience, no way. Just thinking about being on a horse 24 hours after the surgery is making my stomach churn and my mouth ache. But of course everyone's different.

And lest everyone think I'm a complete sissy, I gathered up all the sheets and stuff and tidied the delivery room an hour after giving birth. The next day I spent four hours finishing up a client report that was due. Wisdom teeth out was way worse for me than childbirth in terms of being incapacitated.

No, I don't think he will be. I have heard of some people going to class afterward, but not riding horses! lol. Maybe he can go to the ranch, but not ride.

I got mine out at 14 and am 21 now...I was doped up on codeine for at least a week eating nothing but mashed potatoes and sour cream myself.

LOL we are well stocked in yogurt, pudding, potatoes and ice cream (my son is omni, so he will get to be vegetarian for a few days, I WILL NOT blend meat for him...ughhhh).

Fortunately, I had paid for this trip many months ago, it was non-refundable, but they rescheduled our day til May 1st. So it's all good...

Except I hate to have ice cream in the house..........ugh one of my weaknesses!

Ew, blended meat. Even when I ate meat I'd never have touched that. God, how desperate would you have to be for that?

The funniest part of the whole experience was the leaflet they sent home with me. Actually, the only funny part of the experience. I was lying on the couch the next day with huge packets of gauze in my mouth because I was still oozing blood and read the leaflet, which actually said something like "avoid hard or sharp foods like corn chips for the first 24-48 hours." How stupid would you have to be to eat corn chips with fresh wounds in your gums? I'm sure someone, somewhere, did it though, hence the warning.

Glad you were able to reschedule!

Back then, I was still omni and even then it grossed me out.

Yeah. I'm trying to imagine a steak smoothie without gagging. I also never got the meat-based baby foods. I mean, yuck!

I have to get all 4 of mine pulled on the 25th *sob* and I'm not looking forward to it at all. I'm going with just a mild sedative for anxiety...didn't like the idea of the IV sedation because I'm still awake, he just said you're to the point where you don't care what goes on. I don't like the feeling of not being in control.
I'm extremely nervous, but the pain was really bad a month or so ago (there's even a post here about it somewhere).
I'd think that it'd take atleast 4-5 days to feel 'normal'....I say make him take it slow.
Wish him luck!

So OR and general anesthesia it is *sighs*

But when I went in the back room, he was sound asleep...you will be fine, in fact he doesn't even remember getting the IV....

Good luck to you!

Pretty desperate. Think of all the aging omnis in nursing homes who are on "soft food" and "pureed food" diets.

<<< Speaking as someone who worked for years in nursing home kitchens.

Can you let me know how it goes? Three of my wisdom teeth are impacted (sp?) and need to be cut out, I'm letting them take the fourth one too as preventive measures. I keep putting it off though, I hate dentists. I'm scared to death of it, knowing you survive will help methinks :)

He probably won't be up to it. The pain medication that the dentist gave me was quite powerful and I spent two days after my wisdom teeth removal on the couch with ice packs on my face watching movies. I got mine done on a Friday and I was able to go to work on Monday, but I still wasn't feeling 100% and I was hungry (couldn't eat solid food and I was already sick of jello and yogurt).

I remember getting mine out at age 16. They put an IV or something similar into my arm, so I was out while they did the operation. Right after it, they told me I should drink a Coke, and for the next few days I had to only eat cold, soft foods.

Just an update: My son was in the OR for about 1/2 hour total...everything was fine.

He was pretty miserable last night, but today he seems fine. A bit tender, but fine in general.

Glad I changed the ranch date, but he is watching movies and eating ice cream...not a bad thing for your birthday (though not the coolest thing either).

I wouldn't have been up to that the very next day. The pain medication made me too tired to do anything. I basically sat on the couch slopping down pudding and watching TV all day.
