View Full Version : Help - mystery stomach bug!

Ugh, I hope someobody can help me here. I woke up at about 4.30 on Friday morning feeling sick and with a churning stomach. I couldn't stop belching and these were horrible, like belching 'rotten eggs'. I went to the toilet where I realised I had diarrhoea. Shortly afterwards I was violently sick. I felt groggy for the test of the day, but I felt much better by Wednesday. Unfortunately, I woke up with the same symptoms today, although luckily this time I wasn't sick. I still feel pretty lousy.
As I can't think of anything dodgy I have eaten, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this themselves or know what it might be?

Hi Jon_Veggie. My stepmom had this about a week before you caught it. I don't know what it is either, but she is over it now. I've got a friend in New York who's just caught it too. I hope you feel better soon.

It's probably just a random D and V bug, they can often reoccur a bit and it can take your body a good few days to get back to normal. Also they will weaken your immune system so you could in theory get a similar bug twice I've known a lot of people who have picked them up recently.
Rest, drink plenty of water and when you feel up to it start eating plain foods, toast, crackers etc. If symptoms persist, see your doctor.
Feel better soon

:( Sorry to hear that, JV. I'm not sure I have any hints on what it may be, but try and get some water in, at least, so you don't become dehydrated.

Yeah keep your fluid levels up. Whenever I've had similar problems flat coke seems to help. You're suppose to add salt too. Make sure you rest too.

Did you have a fever? If so, you have a type of flu bug. If no fever, you experienced food poisoning no doubt!!

Thanks everyone,
I had an early night last night but I was sick before I went to bed. I fell asleep for about an hour and was then violently sick, coupled with really bad diarrhoea at the same time. Nightmare.
I have woken up this morning and feel much better, although my somach still feels a little tender. I only ate some toast yesterday so was really hungry. I am having a fruit smoothie and think I am just going to stick to fruit until this clears up.

sorry to hear that JV... you might want to stick to the more plain foods... toast, banana, crackers, rice...some fruits may be more irritating to eat and digest, esp b/c you dont have much in there to start with.
my mom always said, once you get your appetite back, it means you are feeling better. so, maybe thats a good sign???!!!
some flat ginger ale might help w/ the tummy too.
feel better!!

Am feeling much better thanks. I haven't had those awful burps or been sick anymore since Thursday night. I have started eating regular meals again, but mainly wholegrains, veggies and fruit. I am avoiding gluten, oils and rich foods at the minute on the advice of someone I spoke to who has experienced the same illness.
Thanks for the advice everyone once again!
