SRINAGAR, India (March 6) - Authorities in Indian Kashmir have begun poisoning stray dogs in an anti-rabies drive that aims to kill some 100,000 dogs in the region's main city, officials said Thursday.

Officials in Indian-controlled Kashmir plan to kill 100,000 stray dogs in the region's main city. They say the packs of homeless dogs spread rabies and sometimes menace people. Animal rights activists said Thursday they will go to court to stop the slaughter.

Animal rights activists vowed to go to court to stop the slaughter planned by Srinagar city, saying it is an illegal and cruel solution to a problem that could be better addressed with other methods.

With the world's highest rabies fatality rate, India has grappled with ways to control the millions of stray dogs that live on its streets.

In Srinagar, city officials vowed to press ahead with the plan already under way to poison strays with strychnine.

Oh that's sad :( My sister is over in India at the moment working for an animal charity involved in strays and rabies control.

This is their site: http://tolfa.org.uk/

And this is my sisters appeal; http://tolfa.org.uk/articles/2008/03/05/appeal-for-dog-collars-and-leads/#more-138

Nice.

Casual indifference seems to be the standard attitude in many countries regarding domesticated cats and dogs.

I went to Russia last spring. In Moscow, packs of stray dogs ran the streets all over the city. No programs whatsoever to spay/neuter to reduce the population. Sympathetic Moscovites, would feed the dogs, further exacerbating the problem.

When I asked about it, I was told that the city govt says there are 30,000 stray dogs in Moscow. (You know damn well if the govt says 30K it's more like 60K.) They do nothing about these animals because they "help keep the rats down." Silly Moscovites, don't they realize rats will eat anything, including dog poop? It was very depressing to see.

Second Chance1 of 7 Officials canceled plans Friday to poison 100,000 stray dogs as part of an anti-rabies program in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir. They will instead work with animal welfare groups on a plan to sterilize the strays. About 500 dogs in the town had already been killed.

Local officials would instead work on a plan to sterilize the strays in cooperation with animal welfare groups and a team from the federal environment ministry, said Syed Haq Nawaz, commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

"We're not going ahead with this poisoning. Not at all," Nawaz said.

About 500 dogs in the town had already been killed.

It's great that no more lives will be lost. 500 is better than 100,000. Still, It's a tragedy that these 500+ innocents were already slaughtered. I wish they would have came up with a more humane solution before the protesters had to step in. I wish the governments would consider things other than themselves before they carry out their destructive plans.

This is also a country that suffers from substantial poverty. When the people can't afford medical care for themselves, do you really think it's likely they will consider medical care for animals?
