While I have nothing else to do around here in America, I might try to lose some of my 19 stone (that's 260 pounds for those of you who don't use the Imperial System).

I don't relish the thought of working out, and I abhor all of those commercial diets that try to trap people into spending oodles of cash on nothing.

Any thoughts on what I can do?

No, but if you figure out how to lose weight without eating less or exercising more, I want to do it too! Meanwhile, I'll have to figure out this stone system, because it sounds a lot better than pounds or kilos. :D I think I can get my weight down to one digit that way; sounds absolutely great.

go for lots of long interesting walks with a packed lunch (so you don't end up buying junkfood)?

Find a a sport or activity you enjoy, I don't like working out in the sense that I lift weights and run on a treadmill. I love rock climbing and dancing and yoga, Though. Pick one meal and if you snack 1 snack and replace it with a low-calorie healthy, Fresh food. Really all you have to do is cut back about 200-500 calories and moderate exercise for about 45 minutes to an hour a day at least 3 days a week. You should lose about 1-5pounds a week doing that. If you want to do it really healthy; Replace white flours and rices with whole wheat and brown versions whenever possible and replace refined sugars with natrual no calorie or low calorie sweeteners, I also read somewhere that unrefined salt, (sea salt, rock salt, etc). contain nutrients unlike their refined table-salt counterpart and should be used instead whenever possible.

Just do something you enjoy, physically that is also challenging. I like to ride my bike, although it really is pretty hard for me...I'm about 210 pounds. I also like to swim a lot. It's challenging, and soothing. Since being strict vegetarian, I've lost 8 pounds, with good diet, and a few extra minutes of exercise every now and then.

Whenever I'm starting out from having to quit for a while due to job comittments or illness, I start with walking.
