I'm sorry I'm sorry I HAD to post it! Portland is such a weird, but silly and fun place XD
"PORTLAND, Ore. -- You won’t find any meat at a new spot in Portland, but you will find a whole lot of flesh.
Casa Diablo claims to be the world’s first vegan strip club -- there's no meat, eggs or dairy on the menu.
The club reflects the ideals of its owner, Johnny Diablo.
“My very sole purpose in life is to save as many creatures from pain and suffering as possible,” Diablo said.
Diablo, a vegan for more than 20 years, insists his club isn’t a publicity stunt.
He hopes to expose people to the vegan way and change the way they think.
While it may not be the most orthodox way to win over new vegans, Diablo hopes people bring some green and eat some green at his new club.
“(It’s) vixens, not veal, and sizzle, not steak,” Diablo said. “We put the meat on the pole, not on the plate.”
In addition to laying claim to the world's first vegan strip club, Diablo also said his club offers another first in Portland -- the first non-smoking strip club in the city."

If all the strippers were vegan, I'd think that was pretty cool.

At least it'll discourage people from thinking all vegan males are gay.
Then again, the article never said if they were male strippers or female.. ;)

Well, it does say "vixens" but if they want to be non-gender biased...

At least one of the strippers is vegetarian. I was reading a review of the place entitled "Boobs With a Side of Soy".
There's a news piece about this place on YouTube: (NOT work-friendly). I must admit, I'd be more enthusiastic if Senor Diablo didn't refer to the women as "meat". :spew:
***not work friendly*** (but if you're already reading a thread about strip clubs while at work....)

I don't think it's possible to promote animal liberation whilst exploiting people. Sad to see such an exploitive industry within a supposedly compassionate movement.

what makes stripping inherently exploitative?

That owner might care about animals (the non-human kind anyway), but this is obviously also a marketing ploy. Guys do not go to strip clubs for the food.

Stripping for money, as much is it is touted as 'empowerment', is exploitive. In a Patriarchal society, women being reduced to certain body parts (and, ultimately, the arousal those body parts generate for men) is degrading. Even if women choose to do it (bare in mind the nature of choice, and how no one can really freely choose anything under the current system) it still perpetuates sexist stereotypes and notions.
Female Chauvinist Pigs is a good book to read about this, if you're interested. I'm sure I'll end up coming back to explain more, but I don't have the time right now.

Only in Portland...
Isn't that where the pirate themed vegan restaurant is too?

Does this mean that the vegan pirate place is closed down or is he doing both?

Yes. They are changing the Pirate's Tavern into a nudie bar. I did a search online and the place got horrible reviews and decided to switch over to a nudie bar. Sounds like the location is bad for a vegan spot, and most of the food was less than satisfactory.
Yo ho ho and a bottle of soy milk. Impossibly implausible pirate-themed vegan roadhouse has plenty of potential, completely unfulfilled. Over-priced and underwhelming, with such a severely limited selection of spirits that if you are not either its owner or owner's spouse, you will probably wish you could b.y.o.b. Pirate theme is little in evidence; looks like a McMenamin's where someone threw a Pirates of the Carribean birthday party six months ago. Save your drinking and driving for fairer shores.

“My very sole purpose in life is to save as many creatures from pain and suffering as possible,” Diablo said.
I fail to see how a strip club advances this goal. All I see in strip clubs is pain and suffering, from the people who work there to the people who go.....
“(It’s) vixens, not veal, and sizzle, not steak,” Diablo said. “We put the meat on the pole, not on the plate.”
That's disgusting....

what makes stripping inherently exploitative?
IMO, it's the fact that it's a job that more often than not, attracts women who have already been sexually exploited in some way and consequently, are quite emotionally vulnerable and fragile.
The job, by it's very nature, often increases their negative feelings of self-worth.
And that Diablo guy is a tool for making that comparison about meat.
I'm proud to know some male veg*ns who don't think like he does.

wow. i'd like to see how a strip club can promote veganism. i mean, do the ladies give ethical/health advise while they're taking their tops of or something?
i totally agree with pixelle.

Am I the only one who doesn't disapprove of this?
I'm not saying I'd go there. I've never been to a strip club, but I don't have a problem with them existing, either. They wouldn't exist if there wasn't a demand, and having their existence out in the open and regulated by the law is better than the types of "underground" places that would likely spring up if strip clubs were illegal.
And as long as they serve food anyway...

Feministing has a post up on this from the feminist angle (http://feministing.com/archives/008601.html). At any rate, I personally don't see anything wrong with a vegan strip club, in theory, but this particular one -- or at least its owner, Johnny Diablo () sounds like something of a prick. I mean, "we put meat on the pole, not on the plate?" Even if it is possible to have a strip club that doesn't exploit women -- and I think it probably is, although I'm not 100% sure -- it seems like Diablo regards it as a substitution of exploitations. "Hey, look. We exploit women in lieu of animals!" That needn't be the essential nature of a vegan strip club, but that does seem to be the attitude of this one.

Do any of you anti-strip club people even know any female strippers?
