usually I buy boca's burger crumbles but there was none in stock last week so I bought Lightlife's gimme lean beef flavored soy protein and made sweet and sour "meatballs"
YUCK!:spew:
The smell was bad enough but the taste *shivers*
this is not the first time I ahd a bad experience with lightlife, I tried some kind of chicken fillets of theirs and barely got down one bite, what if any of their products are good?

I agree. Sorry to all those out there that like Lightlife. To each his/her own, I guess! :)

I bought their "hotdogs" once, and the children refused to eat it after taking one bite. Can't say I blame them. (They DO like the Yves brand hotdogs.) I've also tried free store samples of the Gimme Lean and the "bacon," and I really didn't care for any of it. I just avoid Lightlife stuff, and stick to other things. (TVP, tempeh, seitan, etc.) Meat analouges are fine, but considered more of a treat for summer bbq events in this house.

Gimme Lean's all right, but I usually go for other brands, too, especially now that ConAgra owns LightLife.

Oh man.
Gimme Lean is my favorite fake ground "beef". I've tried lots of brands, but it just works best for me. Tim likes it too and I've even served it to omnis who were pleased. I use it for meatballs, meatloaf and other stuff.
Tim is in love with the sausage flavor.

Gimme Lean sausage flavor is great.. so i was pretty surprised to find that the beef flavor was so nasty. I almost wondered if my package had somehow gone bad, but it was so gross i didn't care to try it again to find out.. yuck!
I'm not a fan of their beef flavor strip things either.. though i do like the chicken flavor. Everything else by 'em that i've tried (and is vegan, of course) i've liked.. I'm so disappointed that their entire line used to be vegan and now it's not anymore.. *sigh* :(

Yeah, the sausage is what I meant, too. I wasn't paying close enough attention. It's so easy to slice off a few hunks, cook in some oil and then wolf 'em down, even plain. Handy, fast snack when all also fails.

Gimmie Lean Sausage is good, so is the Tempeh. I actually like the hot dogs, but I also think the beef flavor is nasty. I have a recipe from Chef Deb that makes great use of this product, and here is that recipe http://www.vegsource.com/talk/recipes/messages/988876.html
Fantastic Meetballs
just in case anyone has bought it and is wondering what to do with it since it is :P
Her recipe is great, and the Lightlife Sausage Links are vegetarian, not vegan (egg whites), but the stuff in the tube is vegan. Shannon

I really dig the Gimme Lean beef style. I like how they hold their shape, and don't fall apart. They work well for burgers on the grill.

hmmm...perhaps you guys sould try rehydrating and spicing your own TVP. I was making sloppy joes, and I had good results.

I bought the lightlife sausage and ground beef at the same time. I was blown away by how amazing the sausage tasted, but when I tried to cook the "beef" today I almost died from the dry heaves. I have never smelled anything like it. It smelled like rotting cow to me, and the taste was...oh my god, I can't get the taste out of my mouth. I'm a bit pissed I wasted the money on it, yves veggie ground is so much better. I have no idea how anyone could eat this, it is brutal :spew:

Gimmie Lean Sausage is good, so is the Tempeh.

Glad to hear that the tempeh is good. I bought a package the other day but haven't cooked it yet...

I prefer their deli slices to any I've had, except for the pastrami-style.

I know it might be sacreligious for some of you, but Schnieder's Oh Natural line of meat subs are great. I had their mock chicken nuggets, AWESOME! I also tried their meatless beef tips (beef tips, not the most attractive name), i made beef curry with them. So good! I heard their meatless chicken strips are scarily too much like chicken. So much to the point where my friend could barely eat them cause he can barely stand the thought of eating meat.

One of my friends doesn't like the idea of supporting a meat company. I can sort of see that argument, but i also see it as a good thing. To think that vegetarianism and veganism have become so popular that one of the largest meat companies has started making mock meat products. That seems like a victory to me, No?

Well, ConAgra employed over 80,000 employees when they bought out Lightlife which had 150. If we continue to buy their products, they will see the value (supply/demand/profit) and veg*ns or those who use substitiutes will have a voice and the company will have to hire more people to supply veg*n food to us all...maybe they'll put more money into advertising, exposing more people to veg*n foods...you get where this is leading to...when I look at it that way, it makes *good sense* to support the product line...

Speaking of gimmie lean, I just bought a couple rolls of the sausage style. I'm gonna try making a "meat"loaf from it, and see how it goes. That ground beef style was gross. Seriously.

ETA: Does anyone know if I can freeze the stuff?

I've frozen it, and it worked.

I like everything by Lightlife I've ever had (their "bacon" strips were the best "bacon" strips I've ever had, IMO--in texture, taste, the way the cook, lack of over salti-ness, and even healthiness), EXCEPT for the "salisbury steaks" and the beef roll thing. Both of them tasted funny to me and actually left me hungrier than I was before. I don't really know why.
