i bought burt's bee's peach and willowbark scrub the other day, and i don't like it. it doesn't do a good job of exfoliating like my st. ives did, and it leaves a waxy sort of feeling on my hands and face.
can anyone recommend a good vegan/not animal tested facial exfoliant? preferably one that could be found around town?

What town do you live in?
I like Alba's Hawaiian line. Kiss My Face's Obsessively Organic line has a good scrub called So Refined. Derma-E's microdermabrasion scrub is excellent for once a week or so (it is not vegan though).

I use these http://www.skinvac.com/. I don't know if they're sold in stores, though.

I like the little cloth reusable spice/tea bags. I fill them with herbs and such to make "scrubbing sacks".

Jason makes an apricot scrub that seems to be pretty good.

i like this lavender scrub - it feels really similar to st ives to me, and works as well, if not better: http://www.avalonorganics.com/?id=85&pid=341

I second the Jason exfoliating scrub. It's quite moisturizing as well as a good exfoliant.

Someone is probably going to correct me for this but I've been using sugar for years. I just add a tablespoon or so to my face wash and gently massage/scrub. I love it and have most of my friends and family hooked on it. Just FYI if you try it, a good friend told me not to leave it open in the shower... apparently she got ants

You can just use a face wash with your normal cleanser? I hear lots of good things about mixing olive oil and sugar, though that might just be for the body, not sure.

I've read some people do olive oil/salt. I think the salt is supposed to be better than the sugar? I'm not sure.
I've also seen brown sugar/olive oil, sugar/olive/essential oil for a nice fragrance.
Here's a thread with other homemade ideas http://what.a.mess.tribe.net/thread/6486f6c6-94e1-4d69-ad77-ff9d653bdfb5

You always have the best ideas! Salt huh? I had no idea. I'll try it. I think I just like the available exfoliant, the fact that it's so easy to use, an dI can control how much I want in there. Sometimes I don't feel like there's enough "scrubbiness" in exfoliaters. I do also occcassionally use the aveda exfoliatation tonic stuff. I have not verified the vegan-ness of it though :)
