Ares is way too young for this stuff, but I thought I'd pass it along for people that chose to homeschool and want to include animal rights in their teachings. The website is full of cruelty free lesson plans and they are free.

I didn't realize normal schools utilized lessons with the cruelty :)

Dissection for one is something that I had to do in 6th grade in order to pass 6th grade science. I was not given an alternative method. In fourth grade, we experimented on rats. We fed one rat healthy left overs from our lunch, and the other rat just junk food. The rat we fed only junk food ended up being very unhealthy (duh) and a lot smaller than the other rat. Just a few of the things I view as cruel that they have elementary age children do in schools that I don't want my son to participate in.

Oh. none of that where i live. in 6th grade we disected (b4 i was veggie) and im sure the teacher wouldn't have cared if i said i wouldn't. in 7th grade, everyone did a virutal cows eye disection.
i guess im lucky

At my HS they dissected not only frogs, but also cats.
I will bookmark this link! Thanks a lot! I think it is important for children to be taught to be compassionate towards animals and actually get to experience animals, unlike in my publ;ic schools at least. Too many people are not teaching their children this and those kids end up not really caring for any form of life, animals or human.

In Jr. High we had to disect a worm, grasshopper, cats and sharks. I very reluctantly did first two, but I had to draw the line at the last two. I told my mom I wouldn't do it, and she was on my side. The teacher let me sit out and I did an alternative assignment. This was in the 80's...not sure if there was a law in place yet, but I believe there is now.

Ugh, I forgot about the worm and the gold fish we had to dissect. It's so disgusting what they teach kids in school. Why can't they just look at a picture of the insides of an animal instead of hack it open? I don't really understand why dissection is even necessary anymore. I own a biology book that shows what the inside of a frog looks like. It is clear plastic and starts out having all the skin on it. You then pull a flap up, and it takes off a layer of skin and exposes the bones, then the next flap the organs. I can't imagine that being more expensive for the school than buying all those dead animals.
