View Full Version : Thoughts and prayers for puppy Arnold.

If you're a praying or good thoughts type person, please send some Arnold's way. He was born prematurely to a sick neglected mom. His brother died Friday, leaving him as the only surviving puppy. Another dog has adopted him to nurse, but he's just so tiny and weak. We literally have to put a nipple in his mouth for him to eat and even then he can barely suck hard enough to get any milk. He's now losing weight (250g to 200g). When I picked him up this morning, he was such a delicate thing I could feel all his tiny ribs on my fingers. Please keep Arnold in your thoughts and prayers. Even if he must pass, let it be in peace without suffering.

Thanks, Bramble and Jenna. I'm scared he won't be there the next time I'm at the shelter :( Poor little guy.

I will definitely pray for little Arnold.
Are they making any attempt to try bottle feeding?

They had not yet been bottle feeding, because he had previously been doing ok. For whatever reason, he's just started have more troubles. He's not growing like the puppies from his adopted mom's litter. When I was there Saturday, I asked if there was a way to get some sort of puppy formula to feed him with a dropper. The more senior volunteer called the people in charge and was going to wait with Arnold until she got a callback about what to do. Honestly, this group does everything imaginable to nurse dogs and cats back to health. If there's a way, they'll try it.

Yes, thankfully ,there are some wonderful people in this world.
We'll keep the little one in our prayers. I've heard many stories of runts who beat the odds.
Keep us posted.

I'll let you know if I hear anything. It might be a couple weeks, though. I won't be at the shelter this upcoming weekend.

Unfortunately, little Arnold didn't make it :( I think he was just born too early and his mother had been in such poor health, that he wasn't developed enough to make it on his own.

Thanks for the kind words all. Something about Arnold really got to me. Holding his little body so fragile and close to death, watching him struggle to just to eat, resurfaced a lot of feelings I haven't felt in awhile. In some ways, he reminded me of my beloved Addie dog. While she was definately better off than little Arnold, she had to fight her way back from near starvation among other ailments. I'm sure this connection is part of the reason I really wanted him to beat the odds. Thankfully, a vast majority of the puppies I get to work with grow into healthy dogs. It's still hard to see something so innocent suffer so much.

I'm so sad to hear about Arnold. I was really hoping he would make it. I guess the one good thing is that he's not suffering now. So sorry...
