We just saw an ad for this yesterday. I think I'm going to watch, with remote in hand, in case of the need for a quick change. :worried: The preview made it look as though Hugh was going to be very anti-factory-farm. We'll see. :)

I actually don't mind Hugh or Jamie, but *cannot stand* Ramsey. I still might give it a watch though, as it would be good to see him taken down a peg or two.

In the chicken show, I think it's just Hugh. That "food on the run" or whatever is a different program, yeah? (I hope....Ramsay's a moron)

I'll fill everyone in on Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall. He likes meat. In fact, he even wrote a book about meat, which is less of a cookbook, and more of a philosophy of eating.

However, HFW is a proponent of free range, and also does his own farming, and is very much against factory farming. I can certainly see monday night's documentary being very good.

As for Ramsay, iknow a lot of vegetarians hate him, but I quite like the guy,and think that he has some interesting things to say.

On the advert I saw, that Hugh guy actually cries about the killing of the baby chicks. I don't think I'll be watching it, but I think that for people who can stomach it, it'll be interesting.

Yup!!* Does too, I've seen the ad.

Anyway came to post to inform everyone that I did not realize til today that this Chicken thing is part of the Big Food Fight (although I had a hunch). I guess post wherever you like. I'ver already posted a link to my thread [post#2 above].... so I suggest as starlass has posted this now, before I cud know about it, then just post in this thread until the Chicken Run is over and then return to my Ramsey thread for the rest of the BIG FOOD FIGHT line up, would be most appropiate.

*confused* are we posting here?

At any rate, I was in two minds about the whole thing.

On one hand, I think the show will affect people more than an AR one would, especially since it's done I think quite well in that he used working class/lower class/whatever people to assist him - the people with the most "need" for cheap chickens, and the people who will need the most persuading therefor to change. Also the fact it's from a welfarist point of veiw it will be less 'threatening' to peoples veiws? and people will be more likly to take it on board - I think.

I also thought it was good how it, if only a bit, highlighted the secrecy behind the factory farming industries.

On the other hand, I disagree strongly with his "let's mistreat X amount of chickens in the hope it'll change peoples minds for the future, and for the good of X-more chickens" theory. I don't think it's morally right to abuse the rights of some animals for the benifit of others.

HOWEVER, on tv they do things I disagree with all the time (ie: cooking meat on 'Come Dine With Me' lol) so though I disagree with how he's doing this, I do hope there'll be a good outcome.

I do wonder how many people will change...?
But then that Jamie Oliver 'healthy school meal's thing had quite an impact. My school, after that, stopped serving chips/pizza/crisps/chocolate all together - and it was pretty healthy before! and continues to do so now... So I suppose TV can have an impact long term on day to day life when approached in the right way, etc.

Certainly got me thinking anyway. I didn't think it was too stomach-turning either, maybe I'm just desensitised.

I'll C&P this elsewhere if I got the wrong end of the stick as to where to post :)

It's a rather strange approach, to set up your own intensive chicken farm, but it should be interesting to see if it gets people eating more free range.

I liked the way he said "every little helps", in the scene where Tescos were playing up about meeting with him.

the only reason he set up the chicken farm was because he wasn't allowed to film in a real commercial chicken farm, so it was one of the few things he could have done

I started watching this last night, but as the "intensive" farm started to come together, I bailed. I wanted to see the community reaction, but I didn't think I could handle the footage of the birds.

Blobbenstein, did Tesco finally agree to meet with him? I saw the part with him sending out all the letters and making calls, but he was getting the freeze out.

I have to admit, I'm having trouble with deciding whether the ends justifies the means here. :worried:

I think that Tesco did agree some sort of meeting, or was that one of the other shops, I'm not sure.

I think the bit about Tesco and all the other reactions of supermarkets will be shown on part 2 tonight.

Try watching Kill it Cook it Eat it tonight on BB3 (new series) at 10pm.

Yes, Hugh had that collared that bit. Smart guy. :) Good on him. I hate the Tesco slogan.

the only reason he set up the chicken farm was because he wasn't allowed to film in a real commercial chicken farm, so it was one of the few things he could have donetrue and correct.

True, I wondered if he'd be able to pose as a worker [he isn't very famous, probally wouldn't be recognised] and take undercover footage... but I imagen that would be illegal, which I think is more justifiable than starting your own chicken farm --- but I was wondering would they let him show it? Soon as it was illegal?

Or would he maybe legally be allowed, but channel 4 wouldn't have it?

I'll be watching the rest tonight anyway.
I felt dishearterned a lot of people said it was "boring" at my school today :-/

I felt dishearterned a lot of people said it was "boring" at my school today :-/ People with no soul, only ego's, don't worry about it bud, its their loss that they have no soul, except trouble is the chickens suffer due their kind of ignorance, & ego BS. ie, their ego is far more important and something moral and principle is clearly not cool enough for the cool kids

I'll be watching the rest tonight anyway. Me too

After clicking on the forums from that website, I am led to think of a question: How can free range (proper free range, not stick-em-in-a-shed-and-give-em-a-tiny-hole-to-fight-to-get-out-of-whilst-searing-their-beaks-off "free range" - which is unfortunately the majority of "free range" it seems) eggs/chicken be made cheaper? Not that I want anyone to eat meat at all but it's a start.

I was wondering that as well Lionspirit.. also if everyone who eats meat wants to eat free range chicken (proper free range) is it even possible? With space, resourses etc. Maybe i'm thinking too much!

All ya really need's the space. Just stick em in the same field as the cows, then at least they can fly a bit and perch on a fence or something.

I suppose, but there's sooo many. Nevermind, i'm not thinking straight today!
