The vegan version of smart balance is good but a bit watery when melted.

Smart Balance is REALLY hard to spread unless you soften it first. I've torn bread trying to spread that stuff on it. I wouldn't really suggest using it for anything but cooking.

You mean Earth Balance don't you? Smart Balance Light that we get seems to be rather easy to spread. It's the Earth Balance that tends to be really hard to spread (we can't get the whipped EB around here for starters).
