I've really been wanting to eat a sandwich recently, but I'm getting sick of hummus sandwiches. I've seen those Smart Deli slices by Light Life in the grocery store a few times. I was just wondering if anyone has some feedback for them. I'm big on texture so if the texture is really...odd (this is the reason I can't eat tofu) then I probably won't be able to stomach it. But I just want a sandwich!! lol

So any reviews of this product?

I bought them when the were on sale awhile back. I wasn't a fan. The ham was ok in a grilled ham'n'cheese sandwich with ketchup. But I'd look for other sandwich filings, like veggie burgers, avocado, fak'n bacon, grilled cheeze, veggies, mushrooms, etc.

Hmm I may have to do some sort of sauteed mushroom. But I used to only like it with cheese which I don't eat any more lol. And I'm not big on a lot of veggie burgers, avocado and fake bacon. Hmmm I may find a good black bean burger recipe :)

I bought the bologna version of those deli meats... the slices looked REALLY weird...and were an ugly olive-brown color with a funny smell. But WOW they tasted exactly like bologna!!!! I's eating them with Nayonaise, mustard, black pepper, lettuce, and tomatoes...and I look forward to trying the others.

I only eat the fake meats if I'm desperate for "instant gratification."

Stay away from GardenBurger...even the ones that do not have cheese or milk still have "Natural Flavors." Hmm...what "Natural Flavors" would they use for something they're trying to get to taste like chicken?

Oooohhh....something you have GOT to try if you havn't already: Amy's kitchen Texas Burgers... I got the BBQ flavored one and WOW!!!! SO yummy!!!! :hungry:

Exactly about the fake meats. I have actually said in the past that I hate mock meats. I try to steer clear because I've just never liked them that much and they're expensive. But man I am just craving a good sandwich lol. :D

I think if you put some tomatoes, spinach leaves, and mustard on these, they taste just like lunch meat. Kind of freaked me out actually, because I haven't liked lunch meat since I was 9 or so! But if I'm hard up for some sandwich filling, I can handle these a couple times a year. The fact that they're not made of animals take the gross-out factor way down. :)

I did notice that they recently changed their recipe to include autolyzed yeast extract (which is basically MSG, for those of you that don't know). So no more for me, as MSG is one of my migraine triggers.

I generally prefer Light Life to Yves in terms of flavor, but the texture on all the veggie slices is pretty blah. Field Roast is good, and I'm sure that if Quorn decided to market their slices in the US they'd be pretty decent as well; I've sliced up their roasts and made awesome after-thanksgiving sandwiches with it.

I like Tofurky for "turkey", Smart Life "Baked Ham", and Fakin Bacon for something wonderful to put with both the "turkey" or "ham". I also like the Galaxy Nutritional Vegan slices for sandwich "cheese". And I think they're all better placed under the broiler to get warmed up and melty.

gardenburger's "natural flavors" are veg friendly.

i like tofurkey brand slices better.
i dont really like the faux meats, for the most part, they dont taste like much, and you have to eat them w/ a bunch of veggies anyway, i wouldnt just slap them on a piece of bread w/ mustard and enjoy it.
i did like the canadian bacon by yves...at least i used them in quiche-type things.
and i have tried the roasted turkey slices which were okay...spicy, so it was something different...

but i loooove fakin bacon tempeh strips. they dont taste like bacon, but you can use them in a BLT sandwich w/ veganaise. love it!

also, have you tried grilling veggies and putting them in wraps?
or the Chickpea salad mash/ "tuna" fish salad recipe?
okara patties are awesome (but im not sure if vegan), and i used to like chick'n patty sandwiches (im not sure what brand is vegan)
Morningstar farms has chik'n and steak strips (both vegan)
SUNSHINE BURGERS!!!! w/ avocado (yummy yum)
falafel *can make ahead and freeze, cook off when needed.
marinate and thinly slice tofu and grill or saute and use in a sandwich. *they also have preflavored tofus out there.
black bean or lentil patties.

also, try a black bean hummus, it make mix up your repetoire.

Our Whole Foods does. I thought they were a bit tasteless, Personally.
Jinx didn't even like them... And he's usually a glutton for mock "meats".

I bought a few of Yves mock "meats" and Tofuitti cheese to make a mufuletta. It was good, Of course it was the olive salad, Like with any mufuletta. That made it good.

I like the Tofurky slices, Light Life "bacon" is good with avacado, Lettuce and tomato for a BLT, If you like veggie burgers, I'm not sure what brand it is, I think Sunshine, Maybe? That makes one with rice. It's good.

Figures I just talked to the rep at Light Life , and they are canceling the Santa Fe Chicken style slices, because they didn't sell enough of it. They were a good tasting product too for being a mock lunch meat. So I'll have to look for another similar flavor from one of the other brands. :wall:

I recommend Veganomicon for some good sandwich recipes (or as they call it- sammiches). They have great lentil sloppy joes, black bean burgers, and so much more that I just cannot remember right now. :)

I do like several of the LightLife products such as their "hotdogs", but I prefer the Tofurkey smoked "turkey" slices.

I like mock meats... by the way, to me do not taste like meat at all, just because they're convenient to take to work and school, and people don't bother me with a bunch of questions.

I don't mind answering questions about why I'm a vegetarian, etc., but sometimes they want to start fights and debates, and it just gets tiring.

Happy eating!

I don't really care for the texture. If you can get Tofurky slices I'd say they're about 100x better. :p You probably need to get those at a health food store though.

I like those too, but they're pretty salty.

I think I mentioned this already in this thread, but it bears repeating. The lightlife deli lunch"meat" is ****ing disgusting.

I like the "chicken" strips but the "stake" strips are gross. As for the lunch "meats" they don't really have a flavour to judge... Tofurky are a 1,000x better.

I have to agree, Lightlife sandwich slices are not great. And not anywhere close to Tofurkey or Field Roast - try those if you want a "meaty" sorta sandwich... I DO like some of the other LightLife products a whole lot though...

I like the Tofurkey slices better than the light life ones. The tofurkey ones are a little harder to find though (for me at least.) The light life slices don't suck. My kids and husband like them.
