What do you all use for your laundry soap/powder, etc.?

I've been using Ecover since we've been here, and it works fine, but I'm planning to abstain from using their product while they sort out the whole animal testing issue. Seventh Generation is what I liked in the States, but I haven't found it here yet. I've tried to find Method as well, but their website says the only place near us to find it is Tesco.

Argh. Stupid Ecover.

I was reading about Soap Nuts the other day and am really interested by them.
I think I'm going to try them. Here's a little info about them: http://www.maggiespureland.com/product.html I'll probably get them from another site because that one seems too expensive. I initially read about them here: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/01/soap_nuts_a_new.php

That sounds very very cool! I like that you can compost the leftovers, too.

Thanks for the link.

Our local Oxfam has just started selling Bio-D and I have heard really good things about it and plan to buy it once my Ecover runs dry...but it is a tad expensive and you get less than ecover. So....I am a bit stuck.

We have such hard water here that I find it hard to get a good clean. I used to use Dr Bronners in the US as an all purpose cleaner (and base for my homemade laundry liquid) but that was a complete disaster and the soap and hard water made a grey grime that I could not shift for ages from clothes and the tub.

Has anyone in the UK with hard water tried those eco balls? Then you don't have to use detergent. I just can't see them working in hard water. I'd like to hear from someone who actually uses them in water like we've got where everything gets furred up with white and i have to clean the kettle with vinegar every fortnight or it looks like those crystals you used to grow for science when you were a kid.

Do most people prefer liquid over powder? I used to use the Ecover liquid but the Bio-D liquid is something like £6.50 and you only get a litre. The powder is more economical but |I have kinda gotten spoiled to liquid.

In Louisiana where the water is so soft you almost feel slimy I could make my own and it was no problem (and a hellofa lot cheaper)

Anyone use ecoballs? anyone tried Bio-D powder?
