So, my physical last week showed that my triglyserides are too high, and my doctor says I should work out for 30-40 minutes 5-6 times a week. I have no idea where to start. I don't have money to join a health club, take a class, or buy videos or equipment. I do own a bike but it's getting too cold for that.

Any advice on where to get started would be great!

cardio:
go to a club (dancing, not drinking yourself silly)
find a huge building and take the stairs to the top
walking in the local mall

strength:
crabwalking
squats
lunges
push ups
tricep dips
pull ups
step ups
sit ups
(the list could go on forever)

combine a few strength exercises one after another to get your heart rate up which would give you some cardio benefits.

running outside doesnt take much money. i know you said that its getting colder, but they sell gear for that. check out any community centers that you might have in the area, too. they are usually pretty cheap. one of my manager's suggestions is to check out pawn shops and thrift stores for cheap exercise equipment.

My husband and I take a 30 minute walk daily. If you're able, you can jog. Costs nothing and you can dress warmly when its cold. Good luck!!

Most libraries have a selection of exercise videos and dvds. I like Leslie Sansone and Katy Smith. Also, there are some good podcasts available. I have a list of some on my website (http://www.geocities.com/ficbot/fitness.htm) which should be plenty to start with. Do a web search and I bet you'll find more.

You can prolly find fitness vids online. Running outdoors is a good exercise, as is just walking outdoors. I know that with running you may think that you need a lot of "extra money" but all you really need is a good pair of running shoes every 4-6 months depending on how much you do it.

clubbing can become expensive if there is a cover charge at the door.

Well I didn't go for my bike ride today but I don't feel bad because I worked in the yard for four hours. Thanks for all the advice, I've requested a few workout dvd's from my local library. There used to be a Play it Again sports store in my area, I'll have to see if it's still there. The closest thing to a community center in my area is a senior center, and they won't let me use their gym or pool :(

I haven't looked at a the clubs in my area but back where I was going to school there was a dance club that didn't have a cover mon-thurs but the drinks were seriously overpriced and the bartenders rolled their eyes when you asked for water. With luck I'll be able to find someplace around here that isn't too much of a meat market.

As for the cold, my next question is what can you do about the ice and snow? I've hurt myself just walking from point A to point B in the winter. Again thank you all for your advice.

shoveling snow is a great form of exercise, just fyi. If it is really cold outside, stay in and do yoga or pilates. :)

You tube apparently has some exercise videos as well. I personally have not tried any but I have seen others here and on other boards mention them.

^^^ What she said, except I do it in my bedroom with my mp3 player (I live with roommates). It's really fun, and whenever I feel like it I add in other exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups in between dance songs.

But I get so self conscious. :o Besides I dance better after a vodka tonic. But I did download some "cardio" mixes so I can put them to use :bobo:

Thanks again everyone for the really good advice!

i always liked dancing in my living room. Oh, and there was the one time that i got a friend to dance the choreography to N*Sync's bye bye bye in exchange for doing something similar.

^ Did you tape it? Just kidding...

I need to work out too. I'm not overweight... yet. But I'm about as fluffy as I can stand. Plus, the extra stamina would be nice and I'd be healthier. So yesterday I *finally * got my Husband to show me where the gym is (we have access to a free one). It's really really nice. I have to start going. (Plus, they have a golf course. I had no idea!) But I'd also like to get my lazy butt out for more walks. My dog loves the dogpark so much that we always go there where she can run around with other dogs but I usually just sit and talk to all the people there with my friend.

Not a helpful post... but I feel ya. Lately all I've been doing is the occassional (read: rare) game of tennis and playing with my dog.

I don't know how active craigslist is in your area, but if it's active you might look there for a stationary bike. People in the bay area get rid of them all the time. Sometimes they're free, $25 or $50. Another option might be finding a set of rollers which allow you to ride your bicycle indoors. Those usually aren't available on craigslist, but you might check anyway.

I also can't afford a gym or equipment. I'm also lazy, but that's another problem I'm working on overcoming. I do crunches and push-ups. I have started taking long walks around the neighborhood in the evenings. I walk to/from work. I make up my own stretches, which I'm sure must be good for something. And who needs hand weights when you have the complete Harry Potter set in hardcover?

Go to your local highschool or college, and run the track, do some stairs on the bleachers, pushups, and sprints and jogs.
If you want a workout plan message me and Ill type a good one up for you.

craigslist has a list of free stuff.....search exercise equipment or fitness videos. There are always good quality stuff there. :) Make sure you click on your area first.

Thank you all for replying. I've been mostly doing dancing and stretches, as well as modified crunches and a little jogging in my neighborhood when there's no snow. I got a few work out videos from my library but I've found the instruction to be obnoxious. Nothing likely has turned up on craigslist, but I'll keep searching.

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions.

I do own a bike but it's getting too cold for that.

I know this isn't an option at the moment, but once you consider it warm enough to use your bike I highly recommend you use your bike as a way to get yourself to and from work (if you have a job). You'll save money and get into great shape. It is a win win.

Rope-jumping is excellent choice for me.
Sometimes i don't like to go long distance for workout.
