View Full Version : Not Telling Omni Parents

I've tried going veggie several times before and it always ends up in flames. I'm determined to do it different this time. I'm taking it slow and don't plan on telling my parents until I'm almost there.
They won't take me seriously this time so I want to make sure I'm going to do it right before I get the whole, " I just can't afford to cook two different meals, what are we going to do for dinner since you won't eat anything anymore. You can't live off of pasta!"
Here's the question I'm giving up all red meats first. What do I do when my steak and ham loving parents cook steak for dinner:spew:
I can't just not take some or they'll know somethings up. I don't no what to do!

How old are you?! Is it really that difficult to cook your own meals?
And why red meat anyway?
You'll never survive vegetarianism if you can't even cook. Ask your mom or dad to show you how to make some of your favorite meals. You can experiment from there.

The only thing I can cook is Ramen and sometimes I can boil some rice without burning the pan. I also can manage boiling frozen vegetables, and I've made it fine as a vegetarian! :P

To date I am able to cook water in the watercooker and make noodles and tea. I can also put on the oven for when my mum comes home.
I'm 15, and have no problem with being vegetarian. I dont cook my own meals though.
They will probably find out someday anyway, why keep it a secret?

Just to be clear I can cook, but sometimes I don't have time because I'm very involved at school. That's when the problem comes in since I'm hungry but there's only meat.
I'm 13 and I'm cutting out red meat first just because the parents will take that easier than chicken. Mom thinks a person can't live without fish or chicken. Apparently I will become underweight, have no muscle mass, and no energy because meat is the only place to get protein.

because meat is the only place to get protein.
that's ignorant.

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_protein) lists certain plants you can get protein from.
that's ignorant.
That's insightful.

If they provide all your meals it will be pretty much impossible to keep it a secret. You really have to either:
a) tell them
b) cook for yourself (and come up with a reason for doing so, probably)
Preferably both.
How old are you?

I'm really confused. How can you stop eating without 1) telling your parents, and 2) do it sucessfully? I suggest having an adult conversation with them to let them know how serious you are about becoming a vegetarian. Do your research (unless you already know) for medically back information about vegetarian diets. Since they are parents, they will want info they can trust. So getting info about protien from Joe Schmoe doesn't exaclty relieve your parents' fears. And it might help them get used to the idea of you being a vegetarian if you say you want to start slowly by cutting out one type of meat each week or month. And since your parents are your parents and I know how hard it is to talk to my mom about this (I don't know why, it just is) if it's too hard email them or write them a letter. Good luck!

I am confused
1) it seems like your asking a quesiton
2) In the second sentance you said something about not eating. is that anorexia? not veggie? :)
3) is thus supposed to be a guide? cause next time say that.

That's actually a great idea. I did the same thing when I went vegan... I didn't bother to tell them until I'd been one for two weeks, that way they know that you can do it. You might want to do some research too on nutrition or even see a nutritionist incase they worry about you getting a proper intake of nutrients.
best of luck xD

I did the same, I didn't tell them after 2 weeks. They are not totally supportive but they do the best they can.
Do some research, print it, and show it to your parents (meat is not the only source of protein) My parents as yours, didn't took me seriously but when they found out I had done research they started to respect my decision.
Good luck =)

You just need to show your parents how determined you are. You need to be stubborn.
You should buy a cookbook or look up a recipe online and make a big family meal and say "oh, this is vegetarian AND has Xgrams of protein".
When I first went vegetarian I stuck up posters of dead pigs on the fridge with a title saying "I AM VEGETARIAN NOW" and they got the message.
:D
Good luck. It's your life, it's your body, don't let your parents control you.

my best friend has a problem like this, her mom makes a very big deal of it (she's lacto veg) she says things like:
your going to make yourself sick
you wont get the proper protien (she is also alergic to nuts)
your going to lose so much weight then we're going to have to take you to the dotor, then its going to give reason for james to take you away (her 'sperm donner')
I'm worried about her also about getting the proper nutrients because her mom wont let her help shop. It just angers me that her mom is so un-supporrtive! I cant really give any suggestions on what to do if it were to tell you anything (i'm a reble) I would say "screw 'em" but, that probably isnt the best advice you've heard, so ya ignore me.

I waited two weeks, like some above. My Mom been amazingly supportive. Even bought veggie burgers at the store...Which I subsequently concluded were horrible and I'll never eat again. Today was fried eggplant for supper. Mmmmmhmmmmm. Bless my Parental Unit!

Tell your parents and come up witha solution for this. Have you tried faux meat? Tastes the same, looks the same, but it's cruelty-free.

I was veg for a week before I told my mom. She's supportive, but my dad asks me nearly every day if I want some of his hamburger/pepperoni pizza/sausage/etc... he just doesn't get it!
I agree with trying_to_be, I dislike fake meats. Anything that reminds me of eating meat grosses me out.
