The top headline on the news in the UK today was that our government's chief scientist has advised that badgers should be culled to prevent the spread of tuberculosis among cattle.

This is despite a report earlier this year by an independent group that stated culling badgers would have no effect.

Just thought I would add that the press release from the report released earlier from the Independent Scientific Group can be found here:

I was a little bit skeptical of a group called the "Independent Scientific Group" because if a group in North America was named that it would almost certainly mean "not-indenpendent not-scientific group," but that does not appear to be the case here.

This is probably a better petition to sign as it's on the governments e-petitions website so if there's over 100 signatures the government will post a response:

The government chief scientist's recommendations to ministers on badger culling were "hastily written", "superficial" and "selective" according to the scientist who led the government's study into the problem of cattle TB.
John Bourne was responding to a report from Sir David King, released on Monday, which recommended that large-scale badger culls in those areas most affected by bovine TB were the most effective way to control the disease - a conclusion that ran directly counter to his group's recommendations to government.

the money that the goverment would have to spend to copmplete this cull should be used towards making better safeguards to prevent cattel coming into contact with badgers.
