Has anyone heard about this? I just found it out a couple of minutes ago, but apparently a new law that recently went into effect requires all almonds to be pasteurized, thus making them not 100% raw.

What do you think about this? The article says they are still able to label them raw...so they are deceiving us...it sucks.

I'm not raw by any means, but I like raw almonds. This bites, especially for all you raw folks. :(

Arghhh arrr arr raaaaarrrrrrr!
That really sucks for the Americans...
I live in Europe so I will not have a problem (yet. - as all things American seem to eventually blow over to Europe too) but this sucks, they can't just decide that on these grounds.
Growl.
Well I suppose you have to have imported ones now, and it will be more expensive of course.

Is there any reason why they've decided to do this? I mean, are people getting sick from raw almonds? And why is it ok to not explain or label this pasturization? The article didn't say so I'm off to find out more. For some reason this really bugs me.

I think 2 people or so got sick and they THINK it was from some tainted raw almonds, but the results were inconclusive. There was a big write-up in our local co-op newsletter about this last month. Basically, the lawmakers that decided to pass this moved so quickly that everything was said and done before protesters even found out about it! It sucks.
I wonder how it can be legal to sell raw milk but not raw almonds! :dizzy:

Two people get sick and this happens, yet hundreds die everyday from medical problems caused by meat and nothing?

If you have any farmers markets near you, check them out. Mine sells raw almonds. But then, I live in California; I guess they don't grow them everywhere.

Yeah but didn't the article say they are allowed to label them raw now even if they are pasteurized?

Well these aren't mass-produced, they are from small family farms in ghetto plastic bags with labels made in Microsoft Word, and the sellers claim that they are unpasteurized. I believe them.

What?! But raw almonds are my favorite snack and keep me from eating really bad junk food like cookies... Will steaming them change the flavor and texture? UGH

I think it alters the flavor slightly but it kills the enzymes which sucks balls.
