 My face has been clear for months. I've been following a vegan, gluten-free diet. Well, I decided to buy a vegan DHA supplement and after a week my face broke out. Turns out algae is high in iodine which can trigger breakouts in acne prone skin. So now what? I already consume flax meal everyday. Should I go for the flax oil, also? Are there any other options for EPA/DHA besides sea products?
also: how many tablespoons of ground flax meal equal 1 tablespoon of oil?

If I remember correctly (and someone correct me if I am wrong on this) you need two tablespoons of flax seeds a day. I remember going for 3-4 sometimes, but it was too much fiber. 1-2 TBSP worked well :)

That sucks. I just started taking DHA from algae, I hope it doesn't break me out too!! Go with flaxseeds or flaxseed oil. The oil you can buy pills or bottles of oil(Just to warn you taking a spoonful of it doesn't taste very good, I'd recommend chasing it with something). By the way, a long time ago I started taking one tablespoon of flaxseed oil a day and it actually helped my acne :) Walnuts have omega-3's as well.

Isn't it possible you're just alergic to Iodine? I could be totally wrong but my friend who is allergic to Shellfish says that's the allergen in them. She can't have iodine when she has an injection either.

I would question whether it was really the iodine, or if it was due to the rancidity of the algae oil. Most brands of DHA supplements are rancid, which can't be good for you! Try this one and see what happens: http://www.drfuhrman.com/shop/DHA.aspx
