View Full Version : How am I doing?

I have no idea if I'm exercising too much, too little, or what...
Within these last months, I dropped from 254 pounds (115.5 kg ) to 210 pounds (95.5 kg) -I'm male-
I used to burn around 800 calories every day (Monday to Friday)
Now, I decided to increase these amount to 1000. I'm sure I'm not overextending myself because I'm not too tired (all the veggies gives me the energy :bobo:)
How am I doing? Do I need to exercise more? How good is my fitness daily activity?

From what I can gather It sounds as if what you're doing seems to be working!
Thought its hard to say given that a little additional information is needed.
This includes your age, height, lifestyle (eg. work and exercise times, types of exercises and diet)
one piece of advice is rather than counting the calories burned, go by the intensity and amount of exercise you do.
generally, if you're eating fairly healthily and exercise at moderate intensity (like medium paced jogging that makes you puff slightly and sweat) will be good for healthy and manageable weight loss.
If you've increased your exercise to 1000 calories and feel fine, then I think thats fine. As long as you're doing a variety of exercises, as the body can get used to one sort of exercise and reach a weight loss plateau. I know this for a fact as technically I burn well over a thousand calories a day but don't loose weight as I focus mainly on running and weights. If I mixed it up a bit then I probably would loose weight, but thats not gonna happen.

Well
I used to do:
-60 mins of Cross Trainer (10 minutes low intensity, 10 minutes medium intensity, 30 high intensity and 10 totally cardio -max intensity- plus 5 minutes of cool down)
-25 mins of Running (1 low intensity -as I do it immediately I'm done with the cross trainer and 24 minutes of high intensity, plus 5 cool down)
I do not have time for more! But I go 5 days a week to the gym :)
I'm 24 years old, and my weight now is 210 pounds, 95.50 kilos. I'm 5'11'' (1,80 meters)
About my diet... it's easy to guess :bobo: I do not abuse sweets, and I usually eat around 700-1200 calories a day (on weekends maybe up to 1800-2000 as I do love Soy Vanilla Ice Cream :naughty:)
I know is low during the week, but I do not have more need to eat, and I cover all my omega's needs (flaxseed), my b12 (Rice Milk + Vegan Chewing Gum powered with B12), my non omega's fat (normal fat, from avocados and nuts) proteins from tofu, fofurkey, tempeh. All the vitamins... I think I do not need to say, not in here :bobo: (1 salad full of yummy veggies a day)
My lifestyle... I'm a Private Investigator... so I keep my butt on my car or on my computer several hours a day
Better now?

The amount of exercise that you do was no problem, but i was extremely shocked at your calorie intake!
700-1200 is MUCH too low for someone of your height and build!!! This worries me terribly, especially if you're male! I eat around 1200 per day just for meeting basic needs (excluding energy spent for exercise, and I'm tiny!! (5'3, 45kg)
You body will go into a metabolic crisis mode and will just store everything that it gets, slow down, and you won't loose weight. My mum has routinely staved herself over the years and she has always been overweight. Your body needs food regularly to function at its peak.
I think you should stick with the 1800 calories (at least, preferably 2000) each day, not just weekends and see if that makes any difference.

But I'm not more hungry... Is that normal?
When I'm hungry, I get a snack, (not always)
Sometimes I eat ice cream, and I take a bunch of it (maybe I can take 400-600 calories)
Also, I sometimes I eat Chips with hummus (maybe the meal can be 600 cal as I do eat a lot of chips) Also, I take something more.
I'm dropping weight. My wife is more heavy than me, and she is loosing several weight as well. We eat the same... She does not go to the gym, but she works as a nanny so she also burns fat...
If I'm not hungry... do you think that if I reduce my time in the gym, won't happen that? I'm usually hungry a while after the gym, so I get sometimes some chips, or vegan cookies or a banana...
Does that sound better? I do not feel starving myself... and my weight is dropping (I wanna loose only some 20-30 pounds more and then I will go on with muscle tone, but I will keep doing the same diet, as I will be vegan for life cuz I love it, and I can't eat more) I will only increase caloric stuff when I loose those pounds, like some more sweet stuff.
Lately, I'm eating peanuts, and that has good fat, which increases my dairy cal amount.
What do you think?
I been researching:
I've found out these (http://www.hpathy.com/healthtools/calories-need.asp)
It's a calculator.
To keep my weight, I need 3367.84
To loose 2 pounds per week, I need 2367.84
To loose 5 pounds per week, I need 867.84 (which I usually have, and I been loosing that weight, per week)
I go over on the weekends, however, my wife is stepping up her cuisine, and for example, today we ate a new yummy recipe, with several veggies (fried with olive oil) tofu (fried as well) and some mushrooms. Very healthy and 450 calories :) (only from healthy fat, carbohydrates and proteins from the tofu)

well, if you feel healthy and energized then I think you're doing the right thing. But please dont cut back on too many calories. I know you may want to loose weight fairly fast, but once you being eating normally again after that much restriction you'll put it all back on again because your body, being used to starvation, will be storing everything it gets.
This will happen as my mum an sister are both overweight and have tried restrictive diets that leave them malnorished and eventually put all the weight back on (plus some!)

Yeah, that always happens. Our body is a bit stupid when it does that.
However, I'm used to this diet, as I'm eating normally.
Being vegan you intake several less calories that normal, as you do not eat donuts with tons of trans fats, cow milk, eggs or meat...
Anyway, thanks for the advices :) If I feel starving, I will increase the calories before is too late. However, I do not know how... as I'm not so hungry.

Wait a minute. you're not hungry because you're not eating enough and your metabolism has slowed. You're burning off 1000 calories a day and are only eatin 700? that 1000 doesn't include the other things that you're doing, like breathing, sleeping, sitting, typing, reading, etc. You are putting yourself into starvation mode and it can REALLY mess up your body. Just "feeling okay" does not mean that there is no problem!
You need to take into account your BMR. Eat and enough to maintain normal body function and to be able to exercise without robbing your body of necessary nutrients. A good weight loss goal to look at is 1-2 pounds per week. Slow weight loss is healthier, and you are more likely to maintain if you lose slowly, instead of dropping pounds like flies.

You are starving your body and that is why you are losing weight.
When you exercise, your muscles need energy to burn. You need to fuel your muscles with carbohydrates and protein if you want to exercise safely and be healthy & fit. For someone your size, you need to eat about 2200 calories a day to lose weight that is sustainable long-term. (1 -2 pounds per week. Anything more than that is considered unhealthy and not sustainable.)
Being vegan you intake several less calories that normal, as you do not eat donuts with tons of trans fats, cow milk, eggs or meat...That is simply not true! Being vegan doesn't magically transform your body so that you require fewer calories to survive. Being vegan means that you are taking in your necessary amount of calories by eating DIFFERENT FOODS than someone who eats meat.
The reason you're not hungry is because your body is conserving energy. It thinks that you are literally starving so it is conserving as much fat as it can to survive. But, you're eating so little that your body has no choice but to burn some of that fat.
Feed your muscles! They need it.

I'm sorry but I'm going to agree with everyone that says you are eating way too little calories and your body is going to go into starvation mode. My metabolism is completely shot to hell from dropping my calories way too low. My body became so used to a low amount of calories that now it grabs onto EVERYTHING I eat. Normal eating now = instant weight gain. I felt great at first also and now have a list of medical problems.

I was thinking about this some more and - are you SURE about your calorie intake? I mean, are you sure you're counting your calories correctly?
I was just thinking about how hard it would be to only eat 800 calories in a day. It just doesn't seem right. For example:
Breakfast: small bowl of cereal & soymilk: 200 calories
Lunch: 1 slice of bread & 1 large apple: 250 calories
Dinner: small bowl of lentils & rice, and a salad with low-cal dressing: 350 calories
That doesn't seem right to me.
