Hi all, I'm vegetarian, and I've been thinking about going vegan, but I had a question for you guys. My nighbor raises chickens, (no rosters, thank god) but they're his pets and even when they stop laying eggs he keeps them, and they're well taken care of, so no abuse or anything. Anyway, I buy eggs off of him. So as a vegan, would you think that this is still okay to do?
That, and their are quite a few farms around me (I live in the country) and I know the people real well, but they do sell their cows, I supoose as meat, or use them themselfs, but they are well taken care of, would you think it's okay to buy and drink the milk from them. I just wanted to hear your opinions on this. I may just go compleatly cruelty-free as far as milk and eggs go instead of totaly vegan, as long as I know that the animals are well taken care of.

Hey there! :)
This is a good question and a lot of people ask me it too. ((I like in a somewhat rural area as well--many farms, etc.)) But here's how I see it:
I'm a vegan, and I base my beliefs on the idea animals aren't ours to use. For anything. Granted, I'd rather see people buy their milk and eggs (if they must have them) from small family-owned dairies and farms rather than big ugly factory farms, BUT who's to say that it's our right to have their ((the animals')) eggs and milk in the first place?
I dunno, I guess it would be sort of like aliens coming and starting to harvest lactating women for their breast milk because they like the way it tastes with their Intergalactic Cocoa Puffs or something.
((I swear I haven't been :smoke: or  ...haha this is truly the way I think))
Hope this helps! Good luck and I hope you make the right choice (Vegan, that is :) )!!

Yeah, it comes down to the animals being owned and used by humans.
Wether the animals are being kept happy, or not, they are being kept and used for our benefit.
A coop of hens is still just a vending machine for eggs to some extent.
These farmers are making money off of these animals and the slavery , When they sell their cows that actually means they are being killed for money.
Does a cow really want to make milk for humans every week?
Or get killed when the human has gotten fed up with it, thinks it is too old or needs the cash?
Part of the vegan thing is to live without animals being a source of sustenance , Milk from cows is not for us , its for their babies. Eggs are not food they are ovum.

Eggs and milk are not vegan.
So if you want to go vegan, you have to cut them out. Completely. 100%. No exceptions.
It's as simple as that.
Eating so-called "happy eggs" and "happy milk" is no different than eating "happy meat".
Your question is like asking whether it's okay for a vegetarian to eat "happy meat" raised "humanely" and killed with "love".
Or a person who wants to remain a virgin but wants to have sex just once a year with someone really nice and gentle and sweet and kind.

I agree with diana on this one. eggs arent vegan. If you want to eat as she said "happy eggs" then that is a decision that you have to make. just dont call yourself vegan if you decide that you will eat them.

yea, I get your point. I want to be vegan, but my mom is worried about my health and all cause I have heart problems and pass out a lot, especially if I don't eat, even though their are substitutes. I'll keep on her, and only eat the free range stuff, but when I'm 18, I'm vegan ;)
p.s. diana, i guess your signiture is true, vegans are vegetarians grown up, lol!

You'll be 18 soon. Time has this strange ability to fly. You will grow up soon to become a vegan!!!!
The more vegans that inhabit this planet, the better it will be.
