The general population of veg*ans around here HATES tofurkey. I'm not really sure why. I loved it when I was an omni and still do. I crave it all the time, it's so tasty with hot gravy and cranberry sauce coating it.

What do you guys think about it?

where's the 'I've never had it' option? :)
well, I've never had it. :)

I like it just fine - although I don't eat it too often. My HFS's signature wrap is delicious! It's a whole wheat wrap, with vegenaise, tofurky, fakin'bacon, mango slices, and lettuce. YUM!

well, I've never had it. :)

check the poll again. Ask and ye shall receive. :D

ETA: For the record, I love the deli slices, especially with lettuce, tomato and pickles and a generous shmear of dijon mustard on whole wheat bread. :lick: But I also like to dice up the slices and toss 'em into a green salad for extra protein. Yum.

I'm somewhere between "it's ok" and "only when it's in something else". I will very rarely (1-2 times a year) buy the slices to make into sandwiches, and I rarely eat them all. I also buy the sausages every once in a while to throw in with my beans for a change. I've never had the actual 'Tofurkey' (the $25 package) because I could never eat it all myself (or even with the help of my bf).

I bought some Italian sausages that I have not tried yet, but they look great...

the thanksgiving tofurkey is pretty good. I liked it, anyway. The regular tofurkey, however, is pretty gross. I never liked meat to begin with, so I don't feel the need for substitutes. But I guess it's good for those who do.

I like the slices - especially the peppered turkey ones, LOVE the sausages and like the Thanksgiving roast thingy (but ONLY with gravy) a lot!
So it's hard to vote.

Tofurky is several distinct items, not a generic term for faux meats.

My vote refers to the Tofurkey brand Thanksgiving dinner... If you do it right, it's absolutely wonderful, but it does take some know-how. The tofurkey will dry out in the oven unless you do a good marinade.

I was refering to the Thanksgiving tofurkey when I posted this.

I love it. I didn't even know what on earth I was doing last year but it still came out amazingly tasty. My mommy even helped make some veggie gravy (since mine always comes out lumpy and gross).

What if you wrap it in tin foil? I find that the celebration roasts come out moister when done this way.

Mrrple, try this (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6959) gravy. It's great :)

I made the tofurkey roast for the first time in June. I loved it. It reminded me so much of when I used to make roasts, without the stomach aches and guilt to come with it. If you follow the directions on the box, it's pretty hard to screw it up IMO. Plus the house smells so good when it's cooking. My boyfriend who visited from Scotland this summer who has been at least vegetarian for 9 years(vegan now), and has never bothered with meat substitutes loved it.

He tried the slices for the first time when he was here too, and he couldn't get enough of them. We had to keep going to the store to get more

Now that he's back home....he says he misses North American food... hehehe

Tofurky 'loaf' is good. Really good, but a bit expensive and hard to find around here.
Tofurky 'deli slices' are also very, very good and easier to find around here. I still prefer the loaf/roast, though.

I like the Italian sausage style and the other sausage I tried. Maybe Kielbasa style? They are very good on the grill.

The roast is okay but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it or cook it. The lunchmeats are okay too but I seldom eat any faux lunchmeats, no matter what the brand.

I haven't actually tried any other kind of Tofurkey besides the Thanksgiving dinner one.

Cranberry sauce and gravy make it excellent <3 I love it.

If it's tofurkey or nothing, I'll take the tofurkey, but I'd prefer literally any other brand of veggie meat on the market. For the hot stuff I'm a Quorn man.

I've only had the deli slices and sausages but I love them both. Especially the italian style sausage. Super yum!

I want to try the T-day dinner but since I only cook for one, that's a heck of a lot of food for me to polish off.

I made one at some point over the winter that I'd gotten on super sale around Thanksgiving. It was... weird. lol. But not bad at all! I wouldn't serve it for a holiday meal, but it was a nice dinner. Too expensive to buy regularly though.

I've never had tofurkey nor any other fake meat before, but my brother told me when he visits us for Thanksgiving this year, he is bringing me, the only vegan in the family, a tofurkey. How sweet!

I don't think I've ever had Tofurkey. My non-veg husband liked the sliced Tofurkey for sandwiches, but said the unused portion got slimey too fast (ie- within a couple days of opening the package).

For me, the Tofurkey Thanksgiving meal was a mess. It was dry and not so yummy. It may have been my oven or something. The kitchen was chaotic, so I'm pretty sure something went wrong.

In terms of the deli slices, I LOVE tofurkey on bread with cranberry sauce, lettuce, and Vegenaise. I don't like it by itself. It's good in a wheat tortilla with guacamole too. I voted "It's okay" because "I like it" isn't an option.

I really like the tofurkey roast, but they only sell it during the holidays, at least in the area where i live... otherwise, once in a while, i buy the italian sausage. i tried the beer brats, wasn't too impressed.

Dear danakscully64,

Did you slather/baste with olive oil all over the tofurkey roast before wrapping it in tin foil? (One time I forgot the tin foil & it was dry as a rock) This should keep the moisture in.

Also I mix a package of Hain Vegetarian brown gravy with vanilla Rice Dream milk (instead of water) and it is fabulous over the tofurkey (& mashed potatoes). Simply Organic makes a great gravy too.

As for the tofurkey slices, I make sure to check the expiration date first -- you never know how long it's been sitting there. I've found that the hickory smoked version has the most flavor.
