my god we're lazy. such a couple of procrastinators. we forget to pay bills and then they pile up to huge amounts so it's hard to deal with them when we finally do. not because we don't have the money at the time but because we really forget.
and we have different payments coming out at different times of the month, because we both get paid weekly there's never enough in there to pay all the bills at once so we have to spread them out. we used to have a nice buffer in the account which was fantastic, but with the wedding and other expenses this past winter we used it up and now are living paycheque to paycheque.

so we really want to get organized and start taking better care of our finances. our goals are:
pay our bills on time
rebuild our buffer
put extra cash in savings every month to go towards a trip next summer
maybe pay a little extra into our loan every month to pay it down quicker

i think these are reasonable goals. what we have to work on to achieve them is cut our grocery bill in half (i'm also tricking hubby into eating healthier in the process. 80% of our grocery bill is frozen processed stuff for him to eat while i'm at work. we're going to work on making batches of stuff to reheat through the week instead), cut back extra spending (from takeout, coffee, junkfood and drinks at work etc)
and get organized!!! i think it's the most important one because we really are horrible. we feel terrible that our finances are in such bad shape simply because we're lazy and unmotivated. we've tried before but we have something to look forward to this time (trip) so maybe it will help us stick with it.

anyone else have trouble with keeping finances organized? we could post tips to help each other and encourage each other :)

one thing that we did do was see a financial planner at the bank. it didn't cost anything and she sat with us for a long time working everything out with us trying to figure out where our money was going. she looked at our bank accounts and showed us that we were on the wrong banking packages and spending more in fees than we needed to. also hubby had been using non-bank atm machines to withdraw money and getting charged fees to do so. he's gotten better. he doesn't need to go to the bank often, but i do since i'm payed by cheque not direct deposit. so what we're going to try is i will withdraw my usual $20 for spending money for the week and i will withdraw the same for him also so he won't need to use other machines. then the rule will be that if we run out of our weekly spending money we can do without ___ until the next week rather than take out more money or use debit.
also she suggested that since we're paid weekly and having bills come out all at once is hard on us, we could pre-pay weekly through our online banking. doesn't work for rent and loan payments but for stuff like electric and gas bills, phones and cable, rather than wait for the bills to come in and pay them we will sit down with the last few bills and find out the average cost. if a bill is $80 a month we will set up our online banking to take out $20/week. then if one month the bill is a little lower the extra will be saved up as a credit so if we go over another month it's covered. she said companies usually don't mind, they don't care how they get paid as long as they do. i think it's a great idea and we'll be less likely to spend extra money in the account on payday knowing we have 2 weeks til we have to pay stuff, if it's constantly coming out we'll be more careful.

we've also tried doing up a monthly budget on excel and we haven't been able to stick with it. so what hubby wants to try instead is get a pad of graph paper or something and keep it by the computer so we can do it all by hand. we're both more the type to jot something down on paper than organize it all nice and neat on the computer. so we'll try it that way since we're more likely to stick with it. when we had roommates we kept up with it because we had to divide the bills up and keep track of who owed what etc.

we have a little slotted mail holder we never use. when a bill comes in it usually gets lost in the mess on the desk until we pay it. once we do we just mark 'paid' on the bill and toss it back into the mess lol. if it comes out directly maybe we can keep better tabs on the bills with the holder, keep them for the month and then toss them once everything's paid up. we do like to hang on to them for a couple months so we can compare month to month and see if our electric has gone up or down. sometimes it goes up a little and we try to be more conscious of turning stuff off to get it back down, etc. we can just keep track in our notebook instead and toss the bills

so what's everyone else doing to stay/get organized?

I am not the best at staying organized either. I have a dry-erase calender on my wall behind my desk that I use to note important bill deadlines and school deadlines, and my work schedule. I have colour coded stickies that I put on there too. Green is for assignments due, red for midterms/exams, yellow for essays and orange for bills. It is in front of my face every time I sit at my computer, so I have no excuse for not realizing I have a bill due. When I have paid a bill, I take the sticky off the calender. I also keep track of deadlines in my dayplanner.

I have a little drawer specifically for finances. I keep my budget book (which is poorly updated lol) in there and whenever I pay grocery bills or something, I throw the receipts in there so I can pencil them into my book later. I also have an extendible file organizer that I use to store paystubs and different bills. Before I pay a bill I usually highlight the amount and date due and thumbtack it to my corkboard (right above my dry erase calender). When it is paid, I write a checkmark on it and put it into my file organizer.

As for paying off loans, I am in the middle of taking out student loans that don't need to be repaid now, but will cause me great misery in the future, I am sure. I am having trouble keeping track my real 'actual' money and money that is just loaned to me. Right now I'm just excluding student loans from the 'income' category in my book so I don't buy crap I don't need.

I'm also bad at organizing. You should see my room. I'm still cleaning stuff out of it and I've been doing that since like late 2005!

ah yes i forgot, we got our hands on a secondhand file cabinet a couple years ago but it is poorly organized and it seems every type of file folder we buy doesn't fit in it properly. so it's a bit of a mess. it used to be top drawer=mine bottom drawer=his
we went through it when we moved in june and now it's bottom drawer=pay stubs, tax stuff, other important documents and top drawer=junk with no other home but can't bring ourselves to throw out like some magazines, photos, blank paper etc

people don't really use cheques much in Canada anymore so we don't really have a chequebook to record things in. we have cheques but we only use them for rent. i guess that's why we have a hard time keeping track, we don't carry around a little book and write down every transaction like some people. my mom does but she's always broke too so it doesn't seem to do her much good lol. she just has a constant reminder that she's broke :p

and so it begins. our biggest/first concern and way to save money is to cut down our grocery bill. we spend about $150/week on groceries for 2 people!!!
we are going to sit down and make a meal plan and grocery list and when we do groceries tomorrow we are going to try going to a different store we haven't been to yet. we go to the most expensive grocery store because the quality and selection is the best. the one next to it is the cheapest in town but has poor selection and the produce is always half rotten and full of fruit flies. we sometimes go there if we just need to pick up a couple of things but we do the bulk of our shopping at the "good" store lol. so we'll try this other one, it's actually closer to where we live now and is somewhere in the middle range i think. the selection is probably not the greatest but the quality should be decent.
we also plan to keep a better eye on flyers and shop where the sales are from now on :)

we also had big plans to have a garage sale when we moved to our new apartment. while we packed we went through everything and started a "garage sale pile" for stuff we don't need. i tried to have the sale but i guess i chose a bad weekend, i made like 10 bucks. so the stuff's all still sitting in the basement. we're going to try to get that going in the next couple weeks. get rid of some clutter and make a few bucks at the same time. whatever's left i guess i'll donate or freecycle. i think i'll also burn some cds and sell the originals, i have a bunch that i don't listen to but don't want to part with "just in case". so i'll just take the songs i like off them and get rid of them :)

the other thing we're trying to do this week is analyze our cellphone bills and see if there's another package or company that would be cheaper. it seems like he never uses all his minutes and i go over mine. i'm sure there must be a solution but when i called the customer service line the guy i got must have been new cause he had no clue what he was doing lol. so if we have time today we will go into the store and see what they can tell us.

Hmm. I'm horrible at organizing too. If you are under the age of thirty I STRONGLEY recomend the book "Getting Loaded". Awesome, powerful book.

Tips:
Start taking drinks to work with you if you have a cooler to put them in. That alone has saved me a dollar or two a day. And far more in the long run since I reuse my water bottles for more water as opposed to sodas.

As far as rebuliding your savings are either (or both) you able to work a second job a few days a week? Serving at night, at least here in the U.S. you can easily make $50-100 (USD) in just 4-6 hours. Fund your account and then quit. Easy scmeezy.

Don't fall for the coupn scam! Unless you are using name brands they probably won't save you money. My fave grocery stores (Publix) generic stuff is actually made by the name brands. They just lable them differently.

As far as the cellphone goes a lot of the companies here are offering to buy you out of your contract if you switch. Talk to them about that. It saves you $200-300 contract cancelation fee and you save in the long run.

I'm a founding member of the Queensland Procrastinators Club, which was formed in the early 80's. We haven't got around to having a meeting yet. no:

Re bills. Mine are nearly all paid by auto debit so I no longer have to worry about late payments.

Online banking is a savior! I enter my bills every couple of days as they come in and have them paid the day before they are due. No postage, and it's a free service with my bank. Once I enter them in the computer, I file the important pages in the file cabinet and shred the crap that I don't need to save.

And I like to be able to look through the financial calendar to see what payments are coming up - it really helps with budgeting.

no doubt. i love it.
i wish my boss would get with the times though and go direct deposit. if it weren't for having to cash paycheques every week i'd never set foot in the bank. but i guess this way i always am forced to look at it and the balance after and know how much money i have every week. i also take out my weekly $20 for spending at the same time.
i spent it all already this week lol. a friend from out of town came to visit, she bought me lunch so i said fine i'll buy coffee after. yeah we got iced (soy) lattes and she got 2 expensive mineral waters, $15 later i have no money left for the week lol. i cheated and used debit to rent a movie but aside from that i'm going to stick with it and not spend any extra.
as long as i remember to take a drink to work from home i'm fine. it's the days i forget or don't have anything to take and get thirsty that i end up blowing money on pop and junk.

(they were really good lattes though lol)
