I am dying for a white, soft, fluffy, luxurious "down" comforter. However, I wont sleep well if I know they are made of feathers. I would have ducks visiting me all night long in my dreams ;). I would feel too guilty!

They have many options for down alternative comforters... and they are just as luxurious. :) However, I cant find any sites that give really good reviews on alternatives. I want one that is very warm --- just like a real comforter.

Anyone familiar with this topic? :)

I recently bought a down alternative comforter from Target. It seems fine to me :) I'd consider it midweight. Its a little warm for summer, but will probably be perfect for Spring and Fall by itself and good for winter paired with a heavy blanket. While I don't know of any great rating site on the topic, there are customer reviews on the store website.

Something like this: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_1/601-1332760-0252962?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000FFB6D0

My wedding registry included an alternative down comforter. i haven't used it because it's summer here so my review won't be for some time but it was purchased through the macy's site. IIRC it was the same price or less than the average down comf.

This site (http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/compare-comforters.html#2) has a few reviews on it. If white's your thing you're good to go, as nobody seems to have any damned colours.

I have one of these (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/20111460) right now. Yeah I know, Ikea is evil and no one with taste would shop there. It's more of a blanket but it really is extra comfy, and crazy cheap. Not white though. They do have a ton of white synthetic quilts but I haven't seen any reviews.

What is a 'comforter?' (Other than something or someone that gives comfort.)

^ I was thinking the same!
Just looks like a duvet to me O_o and nowhere really sells down ones any more cause of allergies

Also known as a duvet. Same thing.

And around here (US) most of the comforters (or "duvets" if you will..) ARE made of down. Guess we're not so worried about allergies or something...

Finding synthetic ones isn't too difficult, but the quality usually sucks. One washing and they bunch up into a mess of tangled, matted synthetic fibers... agggh!

I still have 3 (yes, 3! I like to sleep all bundled up!) pre-vegan down comforters and since they're still in great shape, I'll probably use them for quite some time...

I'd be interested in a site with reviews of the non-down bedding, if one exists.

My bedspread / doonah / duvet is 'Dacron Hollofil' and it keeps me toasty warm, in conjunction with my leccy blanky.

Nuh-uh! Duvets come with those wretched covers on them that are supposedly better because you can "change the cover". But back in reality the inside moves around in the cover and bunches up all on one side and you have to keep unzipping them and moving the blanket part around and it sucks and I hate them.

You can buy a comforter and put a duvet cover on them if you want the experience without wasting too much money. That way when you get fed up with the nonsense you can just take the comforter out and use the duvet cover as a paint cloth or perhaps combine it with your sofa cushions to make a nice fort.

llbean is a good place to get them.
also, "the company store" has alot of variety of weights/ warmth levels.

i have one and i actually find it warmer than down (or maybe my down feathers are all smushed at one end, lol)... i have a jacket from llbean too, and it is soooo warm.
and since im totally frigid, all year round, that says alot!

OK now I'm confused

Duvets don't have covers on them which can be unzipped. They're just a polyester filling with a 50/50 polyester/cotton cover (or at least that's mine, there are different types of fillings but all of ours are like this one) which can't be unzipped or anything, like pillows. You then put the duvet inside a bedspread like pillows go inside a pillow case. You can get duvets which are filled with down and/or feathers but they are at least double the price of normal duvets.
I have never heard of "comforters" apart from in terms of a baby's dummy. :dizzy:

I just got a new one (a duvet) at Target a couple weeks back. I washed it right away and the fibers didn't bunch up at all. It's soft and fluffy and I love it. I only have two complaints -- it's harder to get my lazy butt out of bed in the morning, and it's pretty difficult to put the duvet cover on.

Ok ... so what is a baby's "dummy"?

Edit: I looked it up :p ... dummy = pacifier.

To clarify, "Comforter" is a word used in the US. If you went to a store where I live and asked for a duvet, they'd likely not know what you were referring to.

Hee Hee.... I was imagining a mannequin sitting beside the cradle. What's that? Oh, that's the baby's dummy!

As far as the washing issue I use a removable cover and therefore pretty much only have to worry about washing the cover. It keeps the actual whatever you want to call it :p from getting all smushy in the wash. Also, the more "boxes" or "compartments" the cover has sewn on it will help keep the internal contents from moving around too much. So look for one with a lot of squares if you can. I would guess the synthetics don't move around quite as much as real down does, but still something you may want to look for.

I'm really more of a blanket layering type. We have 3 blankets, plus the sheet, in the winter. Can put on and take off layers depending on when the heat kicks on and off in the house.

^^
Same

I'm especially into those HUGE plush blankies with prints on them that you get at the Korean store around here somewhere. I need to get rid of my down comforter. I actually sleep on it, not under it, because it's soft and cushy. I can live without it -.-;

Actually I think the only reason I have it is because my brother stuck it on my bed one day when he decided he was a real vegan.

XD; I never have anything good to say :p

Almost nobody is actually allergic to down or feathers. They are allergic to common contaminants that used to be present on the down and feathers in pillows or comforters. Almost all modern pillows and comforters are hypo-allergenic.

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but just in case...

I bought my down alternative at Overstock.com for $50 with $1 shipping. While it was comfortable for a while, washing it made it lumpy. As much as I like the puffiness, I think my next one will be different.

Just think this one looks like the most luxurious down-alternative comforter for any vegan addicted to feel of down:

http://www.thecompanystore.com/parent.asp?product=CS94x&dept%5Fid=3102

Its also one of their finest comforters... out of all their comforters with down.

the company store also has great down-alternative comforters too. and they can be quite toasty! their catalog has alot of info on the weight/warmth of them, and they are a really reputable company.

Exactly. When we got a new bed, I went and purchased a new duvet/cover. It is now the bane of my existence. :brood:
