yes i know i have alot of posts going on right now but im at work and bored lol. Anyone know anything about the defenders of wildlife group? I was thinking of doing one of their adopions, but i cant find anything about where the money goes. If only a small amount goes to conservation then I dont want to give them anything.

Did you do a search online? I went to their website and they have a copy of their 2006 annual report. It's here if you think it will help:

They sound like a good group but I did not read the report yet, I just skimmed the website. They have scientists and lawyers so I'm sure some money is going to that and not just the animals. But it seems like they do some good work for animals as well.

It's my opinion that Defenders of Wildlife is one of the best groups out there.

One person told me "well they don't seem to do much for pets" DUH! Defenders of WILDLIFE what part didn't she get! Thats why we have ASPCA & HSUS to mention just a few.

But Defenders works really hard to protect the Wolves mostly but all wild animals that have come under danger lately.

I did not know this organisation. So I'm glad that the OP asked his question.

John: Do you know what their position is on hunting? Do they approve of hunting in some circumstances or do they oppose it unconditionally?

From what I understand, they have no official position, neither for nor against, hunting in general.

However, they do actively fight schemes to exterminate wolves, like those practiced in Alaska.

From a strictly wildlife conservation POV, DOW is fairly good. I've given many many adoptions as gifts to friends/family. However they are relentless with their alerts and reminders and fundraising, which of course cannot be good. And since they have absolutely no interest in AW or AR, I have no more interest in them. They can see as far as the threat that livestock pose to wildlife, but they refuse to do anything substantive about it, like advocating veganism.

I've stopped supporting them, but they still insist on sending me cheap nylon packs & shirts.

some other possibilities that might interest you: World Society for the Protection of Animals; WildAid; Conservation International; International Fund for Animal Welfare; In Defense of Animals; Sea Shepherd Conservation Society; Born Free.

All problematic from an abolition point of view, though! (why do I bother naming them? they're less bad than the others.)
