So I was looking at frozen veggies recently, and I discovered a Green Giant boxed product called "Rice Meldey", with rice, peas, and mushrooms in a brown sauce. It's 10 ounces, which is about the size of small TV dinner, and 3 for $5 normally, so it's MUCH cheaper than other veg TV dinners.

I emailed them about the "natural flavors" in the ingredients, and they claim that there are no animal products, so it's supposedly vegan. I trust them enough to think that it's really vegetarian, but I'm not sure they actually understand the concept of vegan enough to answer that question intelligently.

Anyhow, it's quite tasty, and at that size and price, I can take two of them to work with me for lunch. :)

They also have other boxes of mixed veggies and stuff, but this was one of the few that had enough protein and carbs mixed in with the veggies for me to consider it a meal. There are some with cheese, too, for those who eat that. I'm not strictly vegan, but I do lean that way, so I probably won't try the stuff with cheese.

I wasn't trying to imply that it was vegetarian accidentally. This is Green Giant - all they do is sell frozen veggies.

I meant that they intended it to be a side dish, not realizing that it's actually balanced enough to be a meal.

:) I think many other companies accidently make vegetarian meals and don't realize their mistake until after it hits the shelves. Catering to vegetarians, OH NO! *hehe* I know what you're saying though, but my first thought was that you were making a joke. Still funny either way...:D

I'm one of those Google people... Hello All!
I know this is an old thread but I found it by searching to see if there was ever a discussion about how Green Giant's vegetables are not vegetarian.
I have only been vegetarian for about 10 years. However, I found out that Green Giant was not vegetarian the hard way... I got sick! After getting sick I read the ingredients and noticed that their food contain "Artificial Color" and "Natural Flavor" which both may or do contain animal products.

But we vegetarians and vegans should be a bit more cautious about vegetables that are that vividly colored. Scary!

Are you allergic to one of these ingredients?

If not, I don't see how you could become sick by eating these products. Are you implying that you are get sick every time you eat something that may be animal derived???

That's why it pays to always read the labels first. Always. Certain artificial colourings do make me quite ill (genuine allergies) but you bet I check the labels for them every time. Never heard of an artificial colouring derived from animals. Some "natural" food colouring is, though.
