I've had a few different brands and they were okay. I've had Stonewalls Jerquee and another brand made of tempeh. I used to love jerky when I was an omni, it's actually one of the very very few things I miss. Many health food stores and stores like Whole Foods and Henry's Farmers market carry them. If you get them in stores, they're only about a buck. You just gotta try it and see which you like :) I'm not saying any of them were bad, they just... different.

The Stonewalls is very...salty... my kids LOVE it for backpacking and school snacks however. But then they'll eat stuff much saltier than I do.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the "Primal Strips" (I think they're called?) however. My kids say they're too "slimy" to be like Jerky but I love that they're not so chewy and hard. And they have awesome flavors!

I think soy jerky is known for being salty, especially the tofurkey brand.

Yes! Primal Strips were what they were called. I had one when I was in San Diego for my birthday weekend. It wasn't bad, it was just different. If I had it a few times, I'd probably become addicted like I do to things like that :) They are slimey, I agree. The Stonewalls is the closest in texture to jerky from the kinds I've had and seen.

Actually the Primal Strip I tried was made out of Seitan, not tempeh like I originally thought. :)

I love Tofurky jerky. It can be difficult to chew, I usually suck on a piece for about minute before I start to chew. And be sure you have some floss handy!

Stonewall's has the texture of styrofoam and is really salty. I'll let you decide whether or not that's a good thing. I've only had Primal Strips once and didn't really care for them (I can't recall why).

I love Tasty Eats Soy Jerky (http://www.tastyeats.com/). To me it has the exact texture of meat jerky, dry and chewy, without any actual meat.

I've tried most of them, and I like Stonewall's the best. I like that the pieces are thicker and a bit softer and less difficult to chew than some of the others. I really like the sweet/salty flavors like BBQ "Beef" and Teriyaki. There's a wide difference of opinion here, so I say try them all! Luckily they usually come in individual serving-size bags so you won't be stuck with a bunch if you don't like it. ;)

I second!

Whenever I go grocery shopping I buy this a mini baguette and some Honest Tea, and eat them on the way home.

I have tried all those brands and then some. Vegi-Deli made the best ever, but they seem to have gone out of business. For the money, Stonewall's gives the best bang for the buck when you get their 8oz economy size. I got their 5lb economy size once and it was already stale. If you like hot jerky, then the "Original Wild" is the way to go (my fav). Prefer mild? Then go with "Teriyaki Beef" or "Original Mild". The "Bacon" is way too salty.

An alternative is looking at Spice Of Life name brand. It is identical to Stonewall's (I think Stonewall's makes it for this company). One advantage to Spice Of Life: they use Bragg's Liquid Amino.

Don't get Vegan Dream name brand. It tastes pretty good, but costs $4 per ounce (i.e. $64/lb). Tasty Eats does come very close to the real thing. That would be a good one. And of course all the Primal Strips are excellent. Their prices are comparable to Stonewall's. I got some jerky from ebay that wasn't bad. The seller said he was a gourmet chef, so I assumed he made it himself. Nope. It was something he got from an Asian store. It was jerky made from beans (not sure what kind). It tasted good, but it was sweet (I would have preferred no sugar).

So, it depends on what you are looking for. I doubt you want it for the realism. I assume your sodium dilemma has something to do with this, so that would be a factor. Protein, too. And of course, I assume you want decent value for your money. I say give Spice Of Life a try (because of the additional Bragg's Amino). The pepperoni flavor may be too salty for you. Try one of their other three. Also, give the Primal Strip's "Hickory Smoke" a chance. It's addictive. Have a knife ready, though. Opening the package is rough.

This, I thought had a good texture.. However, I had this strange chocolate taste to me that was odd. =P

I mean, I love chocolate.. But when I think jerky, I don't think chocolate.

I just had to bump this thread... I tried Tasty Eats Soy Jerky for the first time and it's VERY impressive. Best one I've had so far! Warning, the teriyaki has a slight cigarette aftertaste from the soy sauce I think. I'm going to try the original soon!

I think it's hilarious that ****ake mushrooms got censored. Sorry, totally unrelated to this topic...

I didn't notice that. *haha* Can we write about roaches or a certain part of a plane? I can understand why it's important to sensor, but it's funny when systems can't tell the difference between a bad word and a food product :)

Shiitake. If you spell it liek that, there's no censor/filter action.

I agree that "Tasty Eats" can have a cigarette ash after taste.

:)

Do all of them, or just the teriyaki one I tried?
