Since Veggie Shreds aren't vegan, I switched to Vegan Gourmet for making pizza. While it tastes awesome, I couldn't get it to melt well on pizza so I decided to try something else

Tofutti Mozzarella flavored slices!

It's vegan, it melts really well, it tastes good and you don't have to shred it. Just unwrap the slices and lay them down on the pizza. :hungry:

hmm, i should try that sometime. after trying a few brands of vegan cheeses, i have since given up looking for a vegan cheese substitute that tastes half decent. maybe i'll give tofutti a chance (;

No way! Sounds good. Now all I have to do is find a store that sells them!

I'll have to try that
I've been using veganrella
I find it melts okay but it has a creamy texture (lack of texture???) to it

I've never tried Tofutti because last time I looked, they had hydrogenated oil. I'll have to try it sometime. It won't hurt just once in a while.

I've tried Vegan Rella and Vegan Gourmet and about 982 other brands of vegan cheese and end up throwing them in the trash. Tofutti ice cream sandwiches are great though so maybe they know how to do cheese.

It sounds good melted over an Amy's cheeseless vegetable pizza. (I'm too dang lazy to actually make my own pizza. :p)

 I have to laugh about all the comments re: throwing vegan cheeses in the garbage. Why oh why can't they make one that tastes good????
The first one I tried reminded me of plastic.
Then I tried a vegan cheddar slice with the great idea of having a "grilled cheese" Bleccchhhh!!!!!

I'm sticking with veganrella for now... the best of a bad lot

i was introduced to follow your heart monterey jack, it was pretty good! i make philly "steak" (tofurkey) with it. it's pretty good as far as vegan cheeses go. i tried the cheddar once, and i was disappointed. they also have mozarella and nacho, but i think i'll stick to monterey.

I didn't like the cheddar either. I haven't tried the nacho, but when I want nacho flavor, I just add seasonings to the mozzarella. Works fine for me.

it doesnt bother me but my boyfriend says its too spicy

Haven't heard of this one. Is it vegan?

Jamer, it's also known as Vegan Gourmet. As the name states, it is indeed vegan.

I'll second the Follow Your Heart recommendation. I've been scared to try out any vegan cheese particularly because of all the negative comments about them, ha. A local pizza place makes vegan pizzas and uses FYH. And I have to say, it was pretty good!

To get Vegan Gourmet to melt, put in under your broiler for a few minutes - but watch it carefully so you don't burn the crust. This is by far the best vegan cheese I've ever had on pizza.

When I read about cheese subs, I automatically think, "ew". When I gave up cheese, I didn't buy cheese subs, I made my own if I had a craving. I think home-made subs are better because they taste good in their own right, they don't taste like they're trying desperately to be cheese and failing. For example, my omni partner thinks http://www.greenoptions.com/2007/03/30/weekly_diy_vegan_cashew_cheese
this is the best cheese he's ever had, dairy or not. Because it tastes nice on its own. If you aren't gonna eat cheese, don't eat it, dude!
