I was reading a thread about a creationism museum that recently opened. I was interested to know how everyone here feels about creationism vs. the theory of evolution.
I am predicting that a majority of Vbers will believe in evolution.
There is no need to debate unless you want to. I don't want this thread to become a war zone.
Thanks

It goes roughly like this:
6 am -7800 BC, Sevenseas woke up. He smashed the alarm clock with a hammer and from the bits and pieces of the clock became the moons and planets and stars. He scratched his head, and from the few falling hairs became the rivers. He opened the curtains and from their movement became the winds. Then he went to the bathroom and that's where rains come from. From the half-eaten pieces of falafel that he threw in the trash became the mountains. From his yawning became the sound of thunder. A couple of hours later when he stepped outside the door, the world was pretty much finished.

Creation according to which tradition (http://www.magictails.com/creationlinks.html)?
THANK YOUS!!!
It ticks me off to no end how "creationism" became just a Christian thing. There are sooo many interesting stories out there from different religions and belief systems that to limit the teaching of it (creationism) to just one is irritating. That is also why when speaking of the bible's version of creationism I call it "Christian creationism" to make it clear as to which belief I am speaking about. I almost brought this up in the other thread.

Came a big bang. The darkness cried out, "Oy vey! That hurt!" Celestial dust and other schmutz swirled and swirled until a planet was created. Planetary soup came into being. From this disgusting mess came tiny microbes which eventually developed into animals. One of those animals was the ancestor of Homo Sapiens.
There you have it.
How many Jewish Gods does it take to change a lightbulb?
None. "It's okay. I'll sit in the dark and wait for Edison to invent it."
As you can see, being a Jewish atheist is VERY confusing. :p

I just used creationism to mean the world was created by a being, not by evolution.

it always amazes me that many atheists eat meat.
From their point of view, animals have one life and that one life is taken away for ever just so that they can have a bacon butty, or something, and all they can drivel on about is "it's part of nature" or something equally pathetic.

I believe that the process of evolution gave us our physical bodies, but I also believe that souls/life/"that spark"/whatever is supernatural and comes from god. And that supernatural part of life resides in all living things, not just humans.

No, I heard that intelligent design is no longer politically correct. I tried to avoid using politically incorrect words when posting here, because of the diverse group of people that come here.

That's an interesting way of viewing it. I am always trying to find a balance between the two, because I believe (to a certain extent) in both.

I can't vote.... I am not undecided. I am just neither. God created the Universe. If Evolution was his vehicle, so be it.
To clarify: New discoveries are made all the time. Evolution is widely accepted as the way that life formed now. Who's to say that as man finds out more about the world, there's not going to be yet another theory developed which may or may not be closer to the truth.

Just wondering, with the way you view evolution, do you hold the same opinion with respect to God creating the Universe?

I didn't vote in the poll, as I don't believe that creationism and evolutionism are mutually exclusive. God created, but through evolution. I don't take the bible or any holy works literally.
My highschool bio teacher at a Lutheran school (I'm a non practising Catholic, BTW), explained that the two theories are not diametrically opposed. In his view, the creation story in the bible was written as metaphor. It was written at a time when people wouldn't have been able to understand ideas like the Earth is 4.5 billion years old....
IMHO- God or whatever you want to call the force behind it all, appears in culturally relevant ways, so the ideas can be understood by the people.

I will say that time is an illusion and we both created and destroyed ourselves instantaneously. I am mostly saying that just to be difficult.

That we don't know if God created the Universe? I would venture to say a couple of premises we don't share, Nogardsram, is that there is a God and He created everything.
On the other hand, considering our complexity and the fact that we are composed of atoms (which are complex enough in themselves), it would totally blow my mind if God told me that the story in Genesis was not an extreme simplification of how the Universe was created, and that it was more meant to show man that he was consciously created. (I always imagine after this life, having a chance to sit with God and ask Him questions.)
It would not blow my mind, however, if God told me that we were totally off-base with evolution.
