Do you usually listen to music while exercising and if so, what kind of music gets you going?

3 kinds:
Heavy metal (yes this is hilarious to watch - short fat girl jumping around to Children of Bodom)
Stuff I can sing to (pop, rock etc)
Stuff sung by insanely loud women eg the pointer sisters
(you're all laughing now aren't you!)
I reckon music makes all the difference to be honest.

Music makes SUCH a difference! I just read an article in Shape magazine (I think it was Shape,) about how people tend to exercise longer and harder when listening to music. I personally listen to rock and some techno. Anything with a fast beat!

Oooh, I love any fast paced rock. Dance music (mostly trance) is really fun. I feel better if I have music while working out. I lost my good headphones, so it makes it hard to run without it. Although I did it today for 30 minutes... Sucked to not have it. *whine*
I run to a tempo anyway. Probably because I am such a musical person (I have to have sound ALL the time!).

I have to have music going at all times, not just during exercise, but in every day activites. lol. I always crank up some country music (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Tommy Shane Stiener), and if I don't have thier CD's in, I always listen to country raido. It makes my workout go by so fast~!

This is so great - all these different ideas on music. Since I have taught aerobics for the past 23 years.......I can say I definately exercise to music.
When I am in the gym lifting - it's always the older heavy metal music that helps with a workout.
When I run or I am bike riding..........it must be quiet. Since I have music around me all the time, even though I love it, there are times when I just need to hear whats inside my own head. I love to hear the crickets, the birds, the squirrels running in the trees. HOWEVER........if I am on the treadmill (which I hate with a passion, but will do if it's too nasty outside) I always have some techno playing. I guess I'm like Fafafrappy........I run to a beat!
Fafa........did you know there is a Rock n Roll marathon and half marathon in your area in January?????? Live bands every mile along the route! If you love to run to music.......this would be the thing to do!

I don't listen to anything when I run or walk, but other than that I've always got something playing during a workout. Generally it's upbeat, but it varies in style on a daily basis. At dance class I'm not in control of the music, of course.
Hmm... yesterday it was Beck and The Propellerheads. The day before it was Juanes and Maná.
I think the best workout I ever had was when I went to the gym and they were playing the soundtrack to Rocky. It was hilarious... we were all lifting more, running faster... :D
Social D is always good for a workout, missleigh. :)
Rie, I wonder if that information came from a study I read years ago that found that people work both faster and more efficiently if there is real music playing (as opposed to muzac) in the workplace. There was a section on exercise, too. Hmm.

Mskedi,
Maybe so. I'll take a second look at the article this afternoon when I make it home and give everyone the specifics.

I work at a college and one of our psychology profs, along with several students, is conducting a study on the effects of different kinds of music on exercise endurance. They have volunteers run on a treadmill while listening to different styles of music. Interesting. I know it makes a difference to me!

The 2 albums I exercise regularly to, are:
A*teens ~ Pop 'Til You Drop
The Chicago Soundtrack
Also, I just bought Jewel's new single "Intuition", that's another great one. ;)

I don't usually listen to music while I work out because I really like to concentrate on technique. It's not that I'm all psycho about working out "right" it's just that I do a much better job when I'm paying attention to technique.
Cardio is different, though. I CAN'T STAND sitting on that bike or ellyptical for FIVE MINUTES without music. I listen to all kinds of motivational stuff. Mostly hi-energy and "my girl just left me" songs or "I'm better off without her" songs - that stuff totallily gets me focused.
My gym also just installed DVD players on the TVs in front of some bikes and treadmills so I can watch movies and Simpsons DVDs - makes time fly by!

My jogging MDLP is made up of 4 hours worth of Motown. I also have one of all Beatles stuff. (guess I'm showing my old age).

I like to lift to the Meat Puppets or They Might Be Giants or Nirvana. They motivate me in the gym as well as if not more so than with my own music.
But stationary cardio is usually done to my Family Guy and Futurama DVD's. I just run and laugh and laugh and before I know it 3 episodes have gone by and I've done an hour. Sometimes I'll watch news: FNC or CNN, but not so much lately.

Beatles ROCK
Bad Religion is some good stuff too esp. stranger than fiction

I hate to exercise, and music makes it slightly less obnoxious.
Generally, dance/pop/techno is my workout music of choice.
DDR/PIU mixes are especially fun. ^_^
