Okay, so Im not a vegan (I will get there one day...like when I have a stove and not a micro/fridge combo in the dorm, lol). My boyfriend came back from a class the other day, where he said the professor was talking about dumpster diving for food at the end of the day, and how she had vegan friends who would do that to get milk and meat. My immidiate response was "they are not vegan b/c to be vegan eans to not eat meat or any other animal product of any kind" And he said, no they are bc they are not contibuting money to the meat companies, so they are not helping the companies at all. Make sme so mad. They are making a weird name for vegans and other vegs.
So I want to know what you all think. Debate! ready.....set.......go!

I think the term you're looking for is freegan. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freegan)

I freegan at my work, they always seem to throw loads of vegan cake out on a Friday (probably because it's vegan and therefore it tastes really really bad so no-one will take it home :p ) so I get it on a Saturday. Also fruit & veg that have only a tiny bit that needs cutting off - I have to make sure I don't get caught though so i do it subtly. I don't know anyone who actually 'dumpster dives' but there was an article about it in a supplement called 'free stuff' in one of our leading UK newspapers, the Guardian.

i personally would never do this because 1) i dont want to eat garbage
2) i still dont want to eat flesh no matter the circumstances
but i do think this is ok. someone is getting nutritional value and a full stomach off of eating what would otherwise be wasted.

Freeganism is definitely a more ideal solution to the problem of animal suffering. It goes one step further than veganism in not only avoiding products that cause direct animal suffering, but also avoids products that indirectly cause animal suffering as well as greatly reducing waste. But... I could not do it. Props to those that do however.

actually , freagans that eat meat are called MEAGANS, theres a substantial difference. Check this out: http://freegan.info , look at the links on the side. Freeganism is actually extremely health. There is usually minimal to no bacterial traces left on the food. Read the stuff on the link I just gave.

I freegan a bit at work, I still stick to only vegan food but they throw out fruit, veg, and other stuff for reasons like it's slightly bruised or one day out of date (and when it's thing like granola bars I don't care about that). My co-workers also take things like the cookies (once they're heated up we can't store them again), hotdogs, pastries, etc. We're all starving students
Dumpster diving doesn't sit well with my stomach :flush: Kudos to people who can do it though, I agree with kpickell, it's probably the most animal friendly way to eat.
