So after seeing a couple of recommendations for them around here, I decided to try a couple of Tofutti brand dairy substitute items. Their chocolate "ice cream" was pretty mediocre. The texture was right, but the taste just wasn't very good.

But that was still MUCH better than their "Better Than Cream Cheese" product, whose name is a pretty blatant lie. This stuff really reminded more of the taste of Play Doh than cream cheese. I found that surprising, since I honestly don't remember ever having eaten Play Doh, but I must have done so at least once as a kid, since that's where this taste took my mind immediately. I ended up throwing this stuff in the trash, because it just doesn't meet my definition of the word "edible".

Anyone know of any good non-dairy cream cheese substitutes?

I've already found better ice cream subs (Haagen Dazs sorbet and a pretty good soy based brand whose name I can't remember right now). While we're on the subject, why do these things only come in the really small packages?

Going vegan in baby steps...

I like Tofutti "ice cream". :( Never tried the cream cheese sub though, because I didn't like cream cheese when I wasn't vegan. Sorry I can't help you there. By any chance, is the soy based "ice cream" you're thinking of Soy Dream? That's one of my favorite vegan "ice creams." And I'm with you on the small portions thing. Why is it that mass-produced cruelty costs less for more of it than vegan stuff? You'd think that omni food would cost more because someone might feel bad about treating animals like sh1t.

It might have been Soy Dream, but I don't remember. Whole Foods has several brands, and I haven't tried them all yet. I'll recognize the container on the good one when I go back. It was definitely much better than the Tofutti, though.

I like Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream, I eat it almost every day. I also like their fake processed cheese slices.

I LOVE their cream cheese, but I hate all their ice cream except the cream cheese flavors (isn't it funny how different everyone's tastes are?). I agree that their sour cream is yummy though.

I like their cream cheese. :) Sorry you didn't have a good experience with it. My girlfriend says it tastes like cheap dairy cream cheese, and I never bought the 'good' stuff anyway.

I love Tofutti cream cheese, sour cream and tofutti cuties, vanilla only.

I love Tofutti fake cream cheese. To me, the texture is like fat free cream cheese, but it tastes exactly the same as regular on bagels or whatnot (to me). I also like their fake sour cream & ice cream bars.

I also love tofutti cream cheese! And ice cream. The "cheeze slices" though I think taste like old feet that have never been washed.

Soya Kaas makes a fake cream cheese too.. I've never tried it though.

I think the mint chocolate Tofutti Cuties are pretty good. The chocolate ones taste like Tequilla to me and I can't get over it. I really enjoy Rice Ice Cream. Try Rice Dream's chocolate peanut butter swirl (I forget the real name, but it's close). It's the best one I've found.

Soya Kaas makes a great mozzerella cheese. It's not vegan though. But I had it once and it was awesome. I will have to look for their cream cheese.

I love the fake cream cheese and the fake sour cream. The sour cream tastes more like the full-fat homemade yogurt I ate growing up. :)

Our grocery store has absolutely no non-dairy icecreams, or else specifically made for vegans like tofutti. (Redners) Although I'm not vegan I would like to cut out more dairy from my diet. Even after doing a rather thorough search at Giant, it didn't seem like they had anything either. I didn't really check out the sorbets though. Are most sorbets dairy free?? Or should I just check the ingredients to make sure?

Redners does have a quite a variey of dairy free milks though, as well as meatless meals and "meats".

Haagen Dazs sorbet is dairy free. Most flavors are vegan, though I noticed today that the chocolate flavor has egg whites. :( The mango and raspberry are awesome, though, and they seem to be vegan.

Hmm, I always liked Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese, I think it tastes remarkably like the dairy version! I buy the non-hydrogenated version, which is slightly chalkier than the original, but of course healthier.

Tofutti cuties are definitely worth a try! They taste exactly like any ice cream sandwich you might try, at least, to me they do!

I have some Better Pecan sitting in the freezer... why its still there is beyond me. I was nervous about trying another soy-based ice cream with prior experiences of "ewww....what is THAT?", but this put all of my fears to rest. Its so good! My tummy and my ethics love it  Now to try some other wonderful flavours. The cuties kick butt too.

For Ice cream: DOUBLE RAINBOW SOY CREAM! It's amazing. Except sometimes the store obviously has let it sit too long and then refreeze it, and it gets an icy texture. :( But baby, when it's good, it's GOOD! It has a wonderful texture.

I love the tofutti sour supreme, AND better than cream cheese. The cream cheese doesn't taste exactly like old cream cheeze but it is wonderful in recipes.. esp cheezecakes!

Oh yes.. and the cuties and fudgesicles! OMG.. I could live off those. I would, but I would probably get scurvy. :p

Some of the Ben and Jerry's sorbets are vegan too. I just bought some but haven't tried it yet.

I had to go looking for sorbet tonight after reading this thread. Just what I need--more readily available junk food. :p

Hey, I LOVE Tofutti products. Their Cutie Tofutti ice cream sandwhiches are evil, evil things and I think the sour cream and cream cheese are actually better than the real thing. Trying to get them into the house so I can corrupt my roommates.

Has anyone had the sorbet that they sell at Trader Joe's? My TJ sells the Coconut and the Passion Fruit. It's vegan and sooooooooooo good! I can't remember the name of it. I'll have to go downstairs, look it up, and edit this post.

It's Sharon's Sorbet. :) http://www.sharons-sorbet.com/
