View Full Version : Exercising after being sick?

I had a pretty bad cold for over a week. I'm mostly better, but I'm still not feeling 100%. I don't plan to really exercise hard or anything after work today, but what about light exercise, like just some sit-ups, push-ups, curls, and stuff? And should I wait a couple of days before I go out jogging (my usual exercise), or do you think I'll be ok jogging tomorrow, assuming I'm feeling a little better by then?
Between vacation over Easter weekend and being sick for more than a week since then, it's been almost 3 weeks since I exercised regularly. I just want to get back into my routine before I become too lazy and never start up again, but I also don't want to push myself too hard and make myself sick again.

When I start feeling like I'm getting sick (usually soreness in my sinuses or throat) I actually make a point to work out. I usually cut down on the intensity of the workout to about 80% or so, but I still get sweaty and somewhat winded.
I think that the work out clears out my sinuses and kicks my body into recovery mode. Most times that I do this I don't get sick or just get lightly sick.
If I am completely ill, I usually start up my exercise program with slightly less effort than usual and work up to a full work out as soon as I feel up to it.

Eep, no, let yourself recover properly first lest you have a relapse. Start up again with light exercise, like walking.

So almost a week later, I'm still not feeling 100% healthy. Yes, I've been to a doctor. No, he has no clue what's wrong with me, so he put me on an antibiotic for a few days, and that's it. I'm mostly better, but I'm still coughing due to a drip in the back of my throat. So I was really sick for over a week, and now I've been "almost better, but not quite" for over a week. :(
I haven't tried exercising again yet. This is really throwing off all the progress I was making in getting into the habit of exercising regularly.

I haven't been sick in a while...(knocks on wood). But usually I let my body tell me when I'm ready to kick back into exercising. If it's been a few weeks, I would definitely start out slowly and gradually increase to what you are used to.
