I've found in my local supermarket (Wegman's) a great and cheap solution to my Indian hankerings. They carry about 8 different varieties from MTR brand, and about the same of another. The MTR brand products are all about 300g and cost $1.79. They are all vegetarian!

The varieties I've eaten so far are:
* Chana Masala
* Palak Paneer
* Pav Bhaji
* Aloo Matar
* Navratan Korma

Each of these has varying levels of spiciness. I enjoy hot foods and was pleased with what they call hot. These products are cooked and sealed in pouches like military rations (MREs - Meals Ready to Eat). You could tear these open and eat cold, but I wouldn't suggest it. A few minutes in the microwave and they are perfect.

I found for the low price, they are a good way of getting a quick and small meal in when you are too busy to cook. As I have been extremely busy as of late, I have been eating these daily!

The textures of the ingredients are a bit rough sometimes. The chana (chickpeas) have a bit of a firm dryness to them. The paneer (cheese) though comes through wonderfully.

My only complaint about these is that amount of waste that is generated from these. The bag that these are sealed in are most likely not recyclable. The boxes are coated with a waxy varnish, which my local recycling centers can not process.

The size is also on the small side. Each box holds about one serving for me (they suggest it is 3). If you squeeze the contents in to a regular mug, it will not come close to filling it, leaving about a third empty.

A note about Wegman's: They have taken the initiative to label all their store name products with a 'V' in a green circle if the product is vegan. They are proactive in vegetarian concerns. Some even have a vegetarian bar during lunch and dinner.

Not sure if it's the same brand, but I always buy a similar "Indian MRE" from a discount gourmet food sale a church near me has every year. I like things with a lot of sodium that are easy to prepare. :)

My husband takes the Tasty Bites MRE's when he backpacks. The pouches can fit in a small space and they are filling. They are a nice thing to keep in the pantry.
