My fiancee was a dietary vegetarian for 15 years when I met her. I inspired her to become a full fledged vegan and things have been going really well for the two of us. The only problem for her is that she is a shoe fanatic and we have been really struggling to find her some fashionable footwear that is cruelty free. We've tried some of the common vegan sites (i.e., veganessentials, alternativeoutfitters, etc) but she really isn't digging what they have to offer. Can anyone help me out? She has really been down about it and I'm scared that she is going to snap and start buying leather shoes again!

Zappos.com has a vegetarian shoes section, and Payless has a bunch of non-leather shoes as well. I'm glad to hear things are going well for you both! Good luck to her with finding some fashionable kicks. :)

BTW - Earlier today I emailed several department stores such as Macy's and Nordstrom's and requested a listing of veg*n shoes. I also emailed some famous shoe designers directly (BCBG, Stella McCartney, etc) and requested the same thing. Will let you know what type of responses I get although I have a feeling they won't be very helpful.

We tried both and her response was not the most enthusiastic. She found a couple of styles at zappos that she might consider getting.

What type of shoe is she looking for?

What type of shoe is she looking for?

I don't think that there is one particular style or type that she is looking for. She reads lots of fashion magazines and always points out the various stylish footwear in the ads. She has quite an extensive collection as it is but I know she is always looking to add to it. Her general complaint is that the vegan shoes generally look ugly and/or too "hippie". She points out a lot of shoes to me and says "I would definitely buy those if they were vegan".

Payless often had a good selection of vegan shoes when I used to shop there. There's a veg*n store up in Evanston that has footwear, I believe. (one of the IL folks will know, I'd bet)

Response from New Balance, in case she's interested:

Dear Janelle,

Thank you for your interest in New Balance!

All of the following models are made with synthetic materials. However,
please note that we do use different types of glues depending on what is
available. Some of our glues will contain animal products as many glues
do. Although the shoe may be made of synthetic leather it does not mean it
will be completely vegan. We do not mix real and synthetic leathers on any
shoe.

I'm not sure what kind of style she likes, but alloy.com and delias.com have a nice selection of "fashionable" shoes (boots, heels, wedges, & sneakers alike) that are cruelty free. I've also seen some nice cruelty free shoes at Kohls. (:
Here are some direct links:

these are all vegan:

http://www.mattandnat.com/

http://www.mooshoes.com/products.cgi?rm=list&category_id=1067

i also use zappo's, but i just click on shoes i like and find out if they are synthetic or not rather than going to the vegetarian shoe section.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I've been forwarding everything to my lady.

Also, my response from Nordstrom's was worthless. They just told me to type in a keyword in their search bar such as "canvas".

I feel her pain! I haven't bought leather shoes in years and to top it off, I'm overly picky style-wise. It's very hard to find fashionable vegan shoes, especially in winter. I'm so happy the summer sandals are out! If only the weather would cooperate.

I tend to go to conventional stores and just read labels until my eyes hurt. Target and DSW are my most frequented shopping spots. Another place that often has a wide array of non-leather shoes is Urban Outfitters. Right now, there doesn't seem to be much fake leather (unlike last time I checked), but you'll find fabrics and cork galore. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1145&itemType=CATEGORY&iMainCat=121&iSubCat=1145&sort=0&viewall=All

I forgot to say places like Gap and Old Navy also currently have several choices of fabric flats and wedges.

Don't Give up! There's LOTS out there! I work at MooShoes (www.mooshoes.com), an all vegan shoe store in NYC, and we have some really pretty new styles in-she should take a look! But if she wants really high end (read: EXPENSIVE, but Very nice!), she should check out Stella McCartneys stuff, or Beyond Skin:
http://www.beyondskin.co.uk/html/new.php, from the UK. OR she could always get custom shoes from Veganwares in Austrailia-made exactly to order-
Good Luck!

If she reads Lucky magazine she may have seen this already, but they had a (small) piece on vegan shoes and accessories in the May issue. Basically it amounts to mentioning Matt & Nat, Beyond Skin, and these two places: www.nyartificial.com (http://www.nyartificial.com) and www.bboheme.com (http://www.bboheme.com). She might also considering checking out Nine West (http://www.ninewest.com), Bandolino (http://www.bandolino.com), and Easy Spirit (http://www.easyspirit.com). Although I don't know about glue, etc., they do have a materials option in their advanced searches, and you can look for synthetics and fabrics. There's also mohop (http://www.mohop.com/) and vegetarian shoes & bags (http://www.vegetarianshoesandbags.com).
