Humane Rat deterrent wanted.

Any ideas?.
I have a field rat comes into my garden to eat the birdseed I put out for the wildbirds. Dont mind it being there, but my two dogs keep eating rat poo!.

Not sure if it would do them any harm?.

I know mice hate the smell of peppermint so perhaps that would work on the rats as well? I would plant the peppermint in a pot and place it where you do not want the rats. Peppermint really spreads fast!

Thanks will try that. Becky (my dog) spent nearly all day watching along the hedgerow in my garden waiting for the rat to appear!.
