I hated it, and it isn't Vegan. It tasted like salt to me, for some reason.

I hated it, and it isn't Vegan. It tasted like salt to me, for some reason.
Sticking to Silk here. What ingredient in the yogurt do claim is not vegan? Did you try the regular yogurt or the O' Soy yogurt? (The company makes both dairy yogurt and soy yogurt.) I've read the ingredients of the soy yogurt several times and don't see any animal products.
Here is a copy of the ingredients of the strawberry soy yogurt.
OUR FAMILY RECIPE: CULTURED PASTEURIZED ORGANIC SOYMILK, NATURALLY MILLED ORGANIC SUGAR, ORGANIC STRAWBERRIES, INULIN, NATURAL FLAVORS, CALCIUM CARBONATE, PECTIN, ORGANIC BEET JUICE CONCENTRATE (FOR COLOR). CONTAINS: SIX LIVE ACTIVE CULTURES INCLUDING: L. ACIDOPHILUS, BIFIDUS, L. CASEI, AND L. REUTERI.
At first glance, I don't see anything that is not vegan.
According to the web site inulin is a type of fiber that aids the body's absorption of calcium. They get their inulin from chicory roots. http://www.stonyfield.com/Wellness/Inulin.cfm
Pectin comes from fruit.
The live active cultures ( L. ACIDOPHILUS, BIFIDUS, L. CASEI, AND L. REUTERI.) are bacteria. All yogurt (including the Silk brand you like) contains bacteria. Some types of bacteria exist naturally in the human colon and are actually beneficial to human health. To the best of my knowledge the presence of this bacteria in the yogurt does not make it non-vegan.
Calcium carbonate can come from mineral sources.
I wrote the company and email asking them about the source of the calcium and also the source of the "natural flavors." I will post any reply the send me here.

On their site, they have a section in the FAQs about the cultures in both (Soy and Dairy). Both have dairy-derived cultures.

I got a response from Stonyfield Farms about the natural flavors in the yogurt. I sent the email before I read your response so I did not specifically ask about the source of the bacteria. This is the email I got:
Hello Joanne,
Thanks for contacting us! We always welcome comments and questions from
our yogurt lovers, and we're grateful when someone takes the time to tell
us what they think of our company and products.
To answer your question regarding if the new O'Soy product is vegan,
it may not be completely vegan due to the fact that is made in a dairy plant
on dairy lines. O'Soy is the first product produced on the line and only
after a thorough cleaning of the lines the night before. Though we don't
add dairy there is always a possibility of trace amounts in the product,
due to the fact that it is made on dairy lines, air borne particles and human
error. We test the product for dairy and strive for less than 5 parts
per million (0.000005). The industry standard is for less than 10 parts per
million.
The natural flavors do not contain any animal product or by-product in
them. They are flavorings that are naturally extracted from fruit and
flavor compounds. It is considered proprietary information by our fruit
manufacturers therefore we cannot be more specific.
We're passionately committed to making the best-tasting, healthiest
yogurts available, and trying to do some good in the world while we're at it!
Please visit our website at Stonyfield.com to learn more.
Sincerely,
Diana Godbout

The folks at Stonyfield Farm
After reading your previous post I did a search on L casei bacteria. You are correct that it can be grown in dairy and is often used in cheese production. It can also be obtained from fermented vegetables and exists naturally in the human body.
http://genome.jgi-psf.org/draft_microbes/lacca/lacca.home.html
L. casei are a remarkably adaptive species, and may be isolated from raw and fermented dairy products, fresh and fermented plant products, and the reproductive and intestinal tracts of humans and other animals (Kandler and Weiss, 1986). Industrially, L. casei have application as human probiotics (health-promoting live culture), as acid-producing starter cultures for milk fermentation, and as specialty cultures for the intensification and acceleration of flavor development in certain bacterial-ripened cheese varieties (Fonden et al., 2000; Fox et al., 1998; Kosikowski, 1982).
The FAQ page at Stonyfield Farms does mention the use of L. casei, but I did not see any information on the FAQ page about its source. I sent the email to Stonyfield before I read about the L casei so I did not ask how the lab that supplies the bacteria for their yogurt obtains and grows the L casei.
It seems to me (but I could be wrong) that if the bacterial cultures were grown in dairy, that the dairy content of the yogurt would be higher than 5 parts per million, especially since the soy yogurt is produced in the same building as dairy products. It would appear that there is no dairy in the bacteria at the time that it is added to the yogurt. This is just my speculation, I could be wrong.
This is starting to sound like one of those controversial grey areas not unlike the vegan sugar/bone char issue. I'm just going to post this information and let everyone decide for themselves whether they want to use this product.
The bottom line: This product is made in a plant that manufactures dairy products and contains a strain of bacteria that may have been originally obtained from and/or cultured in dairy.

MeganLynn, you should be getting one of those letters in the mail too.
Macylee36 and sararie, I sent you both pm's. Send me your info if you are still interested.
If anyone else can't get the yogurt where you live, send me your info. I can put you on a waiting list and send in the offer for you if I get more lids. I can't say how long of a wait it will be. It all depends on how much yogurt my family eats. :hungry:

Jojob1969, I finally got my very first one yesterday!!!!:hamster:
I was sooo, sooo excited to go out and find it in my mailbox!!! This is the "Celebrate Summer" issue & I can't wait to start reading!!!:bobo:
I believe it took about what (?) 2 1/2 months or so? I'd have to go back and look at the very first post and count up, but to give others an idea of about how long it will take to get the subscription started!!
I know that sounds alot like I'm complaining but I'm not, REALLY!! I knew eventually they would send them, I'd say a subscription like this probably has to move through a few extra pair of hands in order to get it activated!!!
Thank-you again Jojob1969 for being so kind and offering this to so many of us here, you are so sweet for going to all of the trouble for complete strangers!:wayne:
Oh! You're very welcome for the coupon, I mean, that's the least I could do!!:hi:
