Has anyone in the frugal forum checked out www.angelfoodministries.com ?
They have a unique offer of $25 for a box of groceries per month, no income requirements, anyone can participate, and they also accept food stamps. It looks like government surplus food, probably, but most of it is frozen meat.
I sent them an email asking if they would or could offer a vegetarian option, but received no response.
Maybe if enough of us send non-hostile, friendly inquiries, the folks at Angel Food would look into offering a similar deal for vegetarian families.
Or does anyone know of a similar ministry that offers a complete vegetarian food box?
It is very expensive, I find, to pursue the vegetarian stereotype of the upper income person who drives an SUV and shops at Whole Foods. I think I am not alone in being very disgusted with the extent of the price gouging that goes on with vegetarian and vegan foods. I think this diet is healthy and ethical and should not be only the domain of the socio-economic elite.
Thoughts?
