So I'm just wondering in what ways are you frugal?
(This is mostly for ideas which may help both myself and others who post. As well as maybe make for some discussion about ways to be more frugal.)
For starters, my wife works at a local health food store, which we get an 18% discount (because she works there). She also works in the produce section (best place for a vegan, ehh?), so she gets alot of culled fruits and veggies for free. Stuff which can't be sold because some of it is bad or has spots, etc. We've been getting quite a bit of food this way. During the last summer she volunteered at a local organic farm, which again, she got alot of free food from.
Even though I don't pay for electricity here, at home I have almost every electrical device on powerstrips or I just unplug when not in use, save the fridge. (We do have a computer, but no TV, vcr)
I buy compact fluorescent bulbs when I have the money.
I hand wash and hang dry laundry.
I try to avoid paper waste products like paper towels (I opt for cloth napkins), and tissue for the nose (again I opt for cloth). I'm not yet up to trying the "family cloth" as already mentioned on this site.
I cook most food at home and try to use as much as I can from scratch. We have a large shelf with all of our bulk food items, like dried beans, lentils, rice, grains, dried fruits, nuts, herbs, etc. Buy bulk food as much as possible
I live in a small 1 bedroom place with my wife. Most things we want/need go on a list. If we still need/want it after some finite amount of time (on the order of months) then we will try to get one, free of course, then second hand, and finally new).
Not much for furniture. We have a low table and sit on cushions on the floor.
I build all my own shelving and storage in the place.
We walk or ride the bikes as much as possible. We use the vehicle to visit family (they live far away (2.5 or 3.5 hours away) and there is no public transportation to take us).
We take out money for food every month, and try to make that amount last (any left over money goes into a container for backup emergency money).
We try to make gifts out of what we have around. For example my wife has alot of cloth/clothing/scraps around so we've made a number of quilts as gifts. For the holidays I made a tea shelf for a family member out of left over flooring wood (maybe sounds odd, but it turned out great) we did buy some tea, but used some nice jam jars we bought some time ago (they had jam in them originally, but rather than recycle them we reused them).
We used to use the back of old food reciepts for shopping lists.
I'm sure I'll be able to add more, but I can't think of any more right now.
