:sunny: I had when growing up the unique pleasure of raising two German Shepard dogs and if it may sound like I am prejudiced toward this breed ..........I am.
If you can handle them…….. They do get big and strong ….for most of their lives…
They are some of the most intelligent animals I have had the pleasure to work with.
For a short story. I would have to say they are very intuitive animals with a great sense of what the owner expects from them and have almost a sixth sense of how to go about it.
The male was a bit of a low-key dog. ……Super Loyal ……….would be happy to chill
However ready to protect on a moments notice if he “Smelled something not right”
Not to be funny but what one would call him… a real man’s dog like you see the police using.
He was large and could definitely defend himself.
The female for lack of a better description …….was a real mother type ……always involved…….Loved to be around you………Super smart and its worth saying again Super Smart. Could literally understand your thoughts………like most women…..LOL
There are some problems with the breed thought that are physical…They live an average of only 10 years and yes the time does go by quickly.
They are susceptible to hip dysplasia (over breeding) and seem to be able to get distemper from what I am told.
Of course every animal has his own “Personality” and I can only speak from my experience and the training of my animals but I have fond memories of the experience.
What are your thoughts or experience?

I have fond memories of every dog I've owned and fostered. I have a soft spot for Cocker Spaniels because that's what we had when I was growing up. I also like Labradors which is why I have two Lab mixes right now. Rescue dogs are the best though.

<---wonders how long before the "pets are slaves and we shouldn't keep pets" debate springs up here.
As for me, I like English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Labradors, Collies...
I like most all dogs.

I agree. Rescued dogs are the best "breed", from pounds or breed rescue groups.
I had two bouviers and one lab/bouvier mix when I was growing up. A little later, we had a golden retriever that we got from a family friend's litter of puppies. Right now, we have a labrador/newfoundland mix that was adopted.

My dad's mom had 3 boston terriers while she was growing up. She named them Gee, Gosh and Golly. :p

I grew up with a dachshund named Gus. He was the sweetest, kindest, most affectionate dog I ever came across, until my sister got an Aussie/shepherd mix about a decade ago.
But like the others, my favorite dog breed is the "shelter" breed.

While we're on the subject of adopting and breeds and Bostons, I've started looking into adopting one in my area. There's an organization here that specializes in providing homes for Boston Terriers. My mother is also friends with the president of a local animal adoption agency and she is going to let her know I'm looking to adopt.
Boston Terrier + good home (being mine) = :smitten:

I grew up with Cocker Spaniels. I love any breed but I do tend to go towards the big breeds like Great Danes.

I like a certain type of dog, rather then just a breed. I like dogs with more natural features. Natural standing ears, natural pointed muzzle and a natural body structure. In other words, a more wolf like dog.
I think I'd like a german shephard.

I like all dogs. I have a special mushy place in my heart (like a dropped apple) for rottweilers. I'll be rescuing a couple when I buy a house.
I do think mutts get the short end of the stick most of the time, (my dog is a springer spaniel/black lab mix from the humane society) but I also think rescuing rotts would be good because although they're purebred, they also get the short end of the reputation stick.

Anything big and sweet. I've had multiple lab-mixes and a couple golden retrievers. They've all been great dogs :smitten:

I love all dogs, and have a large 55 pound American fox hound and two Chihuahuas. I have to say though, that I really love yappy little lap dogs. Yorkies, Shih tzus, pugs, poodles, mixes of all of the above - they steal my heart.
I volunteer at an animal shelter where I've had more experience with the various breeds and mixes. And while I know we don't take in any animal that our kennel manager doesn't think would make someone a wonderful pet, I've been very surprised at how sweet, obedient, and smart the pit bull-types have been (there haven't been that many). I used to be very afraid of them, but have come to love one or two in particular who have come through our doors.
It has also surprised me how many beagle-types end up in shelters: especially old, unspayed females - very sad.

I like big doggies! I love my Rotties, but I pine for a Mastiff, St. Bernard, or Newfoundland.
When I get my own dog, I plan on adopting one though. Anything that will love me and snuggle me.

I love my basset hound and any other breed that looks naturally sad and loveable. I rescued her through a local basset rescue group. I highly recommend looking for breed specific groups in your area if you are interested in getting a specific breed (though mutts can be awfully cute too!)

No, they are just very, very lovely dogs. And so beautiful in a kind of wild looking way.
