Has anyone seen it? I did last night, highly recommend it.

From the creators of 21 grams. It has a similar theme in how many lives are intertwined over a single event and the tragic (and positive depending on how you look at it) consequences as a result. It also deals with the issue of those we may dismiss as simply criminals having their own stories and the ugly side of tourism.

I found it quite traumatic throughout the entire film. So much I want to discuss but I can't without giving a lot away!

I would otherwise want to see it, but I won't unless I find out more about the animal killed during it.

You mean the chicken at the Mexican wedding?

It's gross but not worth missing the film over. It has it's neck broken and head torn off.

I assume it isn't a real slaughter...

I agree that it's not worth missing the film if it's fake, but another person who saw the film said it looked very real.

I just assumed that it would be illegal for it to be real. :-/

Yeah well as far as I know, it was filmed in various non-US locations where there might be different animal welfare standards. On the other hand, based on the extras on the 21 grams DVD, the director seemed like a really positive, life-embracing person, so it would seem odd for him to have a chicken killed like that.

21 grams is one of my favorite films that I've watched in recent years so I'm otherwise pretty interested in Babel.

Yeah, the fact that that particular scene was (I assume) filmed in Mexico may have allowed for the chicken to be killed, but I guess I thought it was an American production so may still be illegal. But I could be wrong on both counts (being an American production and therefore being illegal.)!

I saw a film once, it was from South America, I think Brazil, and it had a lot of dog fighting scenes with dogs dying. I imagine they probably weren't fake :(
