This stuff drives me crazy too! I think soy is ok..Maybe limit it some if you are worried about it...Thats what I try to do..Just a few x a week..the rest of the time eat other things. I bet that the people who are saying that soy is bad for us are omnis and we all know how healthy their diets are!

Soy may not be good for you? This is the first I've heard of it. Why is it bad for you? :surprised

me too. i used to load up on soy and just not touch the SPI stuff (coz the general consensus is that stuffs bad, if you eat too much of it. key word: too much) . but i did a bit more reading and while i dont think its everyones view (theres your first clue , its inconclusive research, everyone reads it their own way, this is just mine) ive definetely cut back on the soy in all kinds. ie. i only include tofu once a week now. i have skinny organic milk in coffees instead of soy. yes, dairy has bad points too and i dont like it much, but its just an example of a change where i thought about the pros and cons of both and went with that. its such a small amount it probably doesn't matter anyway. i suggest you do some unbiased reading and decide what you think at the moment about it all. too much of anything isn't good. variety is wise. :) :)

changing one of your tofu meals to lentils is a good idea regardless of whether or not soy is 'bad'. variety is beneficial. lentils are good for you!! tinned beans are so easy to use, too!!! i think thats a great idea!!

Variety is the spice of life! And lentils are the best meal everrrr. Lentils + spices + tomato sauce a la sloppy lentils is fab.

I think too much soy is definitely a bad thing. But it need not be banned from your diet altogether. After my own personal research (hours and hours) into soy, I decided that it's not such a wonder food after all. But it has its merits as well. Definitely to be eaten in moderation.

Quote from 'White lies' (see thread about cows being milked):

'In recent years, soya milk and soya based products have received much attention because of the phytoestrogens that they contain. Phytoestrogens are plant -made substances that can act in a simular way to the hormone oetrogen, although they are far less potent (coldham et al 1997). They are found in many fruits, veg, dried beans, peas and whole grains. Isoflavones are a type of phytoestrogens found in soya beans and include genistein and daidzein. In general much of the data indicates that isoflavones may have a protective role against heart disease. The Uk's Joint Health Claims Initiative (JHCI) offers pre-market advice and a code of practice for the food industry, enforcers and consumers, to ensure that health claims on foods are both scientifically truthful and legally acceptable. In 2002 the JHCI concluded its deliberations on a generic health claim for soya protein and blood cholesteral.
The claim approved states that "THE CONCLUSION OF AT LEAST 25 GRMS SOYA PROTEIN PER DAY AS PART OF A DIET IN SATURATED FAT CAN HELP REDUCE BLOOD CHOLESTERAL" (JHCI 2005).'

This article goes on to prove the health benefits of eating soya. It also states that soya has been consumed for centuries and is generally regarded as beneficial for health with a potentially protective effect against a number of chronic diseases because of their oetrogenic activity.

Could you just see a dietitian? All this worrying about food is just feeding your eating disorder.

No one food should dominate your diet. It does sound like you could afford to cut back on tofu, though you probably shouldn't worry about replacing some of it with tempeh, along with other foods like lentils, beans, grains, and seitan.

No one food should dominate your diet.

Unless it's hummus.

I agree that if you are having eating disorder issues you shoudl not restrict a food without talking with someone. That said, i agree with the others - variety is SOOO important! Eat unprocessed foods like beans. They are wonderful, so good for you, and TASTY. The wonderfood, so comforting, so filling, so good for you! :-)

Like anything, soy should be eaten in moderation. However, I learnt about the isoflavone stuff etc during the course of obtaining my BSc in pharmacology. Soy can act as a preventative to cancer. Obviously not a miracle cure, but eating it can help stave off cancer. I'd have to look in to it more, buy soy is your friend as far as I am concerned

I'm still confused. What is BAD about it?

And is is true soy just makes you more hungry? Feeds the appetite?
